LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - It's raising concerns of segregation, but may end up benefitting students at one East Texas school. We revisit Lufkin High School and their push for a course offered only to African American females.
"First of all you have to be Black and second of all but equally as important, you have to be female. It's only for Black female students" says John Mitchell, the Language Arts Facilitator of LISD.
You heard it yesterday...and you're hearing it again today...
..."And it will always be only for Black females," confirms Mitchell.
The pilot Black Female literature course, only made available to a select few, has some questioning why other students couldn't benefit from the course too.
"We're targeting certain students, trying to get them interested, trying to get them to understand their culture as they relate to it."
In the past, Lufkin High School introduced black literature in English classes, but not without problems.
"The biggest problem we have in teaching Black literature is judgment and when you do that, when you teach it to children who are not familiar with the culture, not familiar with the writings then they jump automatically to judgements about the culture. You don't find that. We're creating a safety zone for these girls that they can go in and ask questions and be free to find out what's going on in the minds of these people and where they're coming from."
Mitchell thinks eventually all students could benefit, but for now they're starting small.
"Maybe someday we'll have a Black studies course that will include White children, that they can come into and learn but right now that's not what we're targeting. We're targeting Black students to give them a place in the academic system to where they can realize the the importance of their own culture."
Lufkin high school also offers a hispanic males only class, but it targets skill development. They say their goal is to ensure each student enjoys school in a way that is especially tailored for them.
Ping,
This will piss you off and also give you some fodder for your next book.
This is just the start of turning things black.
For a second there, I thought the school was offering aviation classes only to black females. I was about to get angry.
Since Zero is half white, would he be allowed to attend that course if he were a female student?
Sounds like Mr Mitchell and Lufkin High are looking for a little publicity, and a lawsuit.
He might even be half female, too, what with those girly hands and wrists and that feminine smile of his.
Oh no dey dih ent!
Racist and sexist, but because it’s for black fmales, they’ll get away with it. It’s OK to be racist and sexist, as long as you go against the right people.
FRICKIN HYPOCRITES!
I guess if the course was concerned with the rate of illegitimate births it might be worthwhile, but it sounds like just another “Hate Whitey exercise”. Public tax dollars at work.
“The biggest problem we have in teaching Black literature is judgment “
Or perhaps it is the bone-crushing desire to only have cheerleaders in the program because so much of the assigned material will be mindless and crude.
Wow. Imagine the outrage if that class was for white boys only.
A couple of hours should exhaust that subject.
Fity four years removed from Brown v. Board of Eduction, troops illegally used as government enforcement tools, billions wasted on forced busing and what have we accomplished?
Racially segregated curriculum, a return for “neighborhood schools” and a divided America. Way to go, bureaucrats. Another “accomplishment” to fatten your resume.
The tipping point is nigh. As for me, I REFUSE.
Permissum bellum suscipio (Let the war begin)
Deo vindice
Eventually there will be a class for every minority and by default, there will be a class room full of white students. This is when you will hear the cries of discrimination and Al Sharpton will come rolling in for a photo op.
If you’re black or hispanic you CANNOT be a racist...that is only if you’re white....and if you are rich then there is an especially sinister brand of racism directed at you by your own government.
I would love to see some lawsuits come out of this.
They are saying that only black girls can take this class?
They are saying that people other than blacks automatically make certain negative judgements about blacks and black culture and black writers? Isn’t that a racist attitude?
Can you imagine if there was a class for only white boys, studying white authors, for example?
Next up, let’s see what they do at Harvey Milk High School in New York. See if they have a literature class for the homosexual students there, studying only homosexual authors.
This is balkanizing America, dividing people into groups based on skin color.
My Daughters' school has a class like that: It's titled "Chivalry"
That's what I thought, too.
When does the Engineering class for white males start?
We used to have a flight nurse joke while I was in the USAF that went something like this....
The flight nurse library burned and both books were destroyed. That’s a shame because one of them hadn’t even been colored in yet!
