Talk about a pet project. A tiny mouse with the longtime backing of a political giant may soon reap the benefits of the economic-stimulus package.
Lawmakers and administration officials divulged Wednesday that the $789 billion economic stimulus bill being finalized behind closed doors in Congress includes $30 million for wetlands restoration that the Obama administration intends to spend in the San Francisco Bay Area to protect, among other things, the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi represents the city of San Francisco and has previously championed preserving the mouse's habitat in the Bay Area.
The revelation immediately became a political football, as Republicans accused Democrats of reneging on a promise to keep so-called earmarks that fund lawmakers' favorite projects out of the legislation. Democrats, including Mrs. Pelosi, countered that the accusations were fabricated.

It’s getting close to the same tyranny that caused the Boston Tea Party.
Pelosi and this whole congress are a disgrace to America.

$30 million is just a drop in the bucket.
What about the $4.2 billion going to ACORN...these people hate you. What do you think they're going to do to you with your own money?

I agree with Las Vegas Ron here. Here's some history. The Boston Tea Party was over a tax on tea at the rate of 3 pence per pound of tea. The Tea Act of 1773 actually remoed the British tea tax of2 shillings 6 pence per pound of tea from tea brought to America by the East India Company, leaving only the Townshend Act tax of 3 pence per pound. The Townshend Act taxes were additional taxes only paid by Colonists in America.
That's miniscule compared to the taxation rates we endure today.
The big issues for the Colonists were:
- The Townshend Act taxes applied only to the American colonies, and were taxation without representation for the colonies in the British Parliament.
- This was a political favor to a well connected company with lobbyists and influence in the Parliament. The East India Company was well connected in the Parliament.
- The Tea Act was a "bailout" kind of measure for the East India Company. They were struggling and needed to develop more business. The Tea Act gave them a tax advantage over other companies selling Tea in the American Colonies.

Thanks for the history refresher.
It's amazing what we have endured compared to what was a predecessor of the revolution and set off the Tea Party.
How far we have come, not.
