While marking the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth last night in Springfield Ill., President Barack Obama made light of Sen. Judd Gregg's decision yesterday to withdraw his nomination as commerce secretary.
"In 1854, Lincoln was simply a Springfield lawyer who'd served just a single term in Congress," Mr. Obama told the approximately 900 guests at the 102nd Abraham Lincoln Association Banquet. "Possibly in his law office, his feet on a cluttered desk, his sons playing around him, his clothes a bit too small to fit his uncommon frame, maybe wondering if somebody might call him up and ask him to be commerce secretary."
It wasn't the only moment in his remarks that Mr. Obama would draw parallels between Lincoln's troubled time and current political and economic struggles. Seizing on Lincoln's example, Mr. Obama called on Americans to remain unified in the face of daunting challenges.
"And when posterity looks back on our time, as we are looking back on Lincoln's," Mr. Obama said. "I don't want it said that we saw an economic crisis but did not stem it; that we saw our schools decline and our bridges crumble but we did not rebuild them; that the world changed in the 21st century but America did not lead it; that we were consumed with small things, petty things, when we were called to do great things."
Throughout his campaign and presidential transition, Mr. Obama, who launched his bid for the White House in Lincoln's hometown of Springfield , cited the country's 16th president as a guide for his own leadership style. Last night, he paid a more personal debt of gratitude.
"It's fair to say that the presidency of this singular figure who we celebrate in so many ways made my own story possible," Mr. Obama said.

I'll bet there are already millions of Obama voters regretting their decision.
Its ALL about HIM!!!....’my story”
I didn’t know Lincoln but I damn sure know that Obama is no Lincoln..and this repeated comparison makes me want to vomit.
I doubt it very much. Ain't gonna happen unless something drastic occurs to knock some common sense into them.
Actually, the MSM ran a story on whether Abe Lincoln was gay and racist and his wife was nuts. That is the only comparison that may be made until BO actually does something besides read a teleprompter...
Oh MY,,if that is true..HE IS EXACTLY LIKE LINCOLN ;-)
Chicago change you can not believe in.
Such a piddling little low-life.
Obama can’t handle that the public know that the guy HE asked to be Commerce Secty turned him down.
A man that insecure is very dangerous when given power.
Whenever I see or hear Obama I think, “Arrogant Hubris”.
“Entitled” comes to mind as well.
Hey, Obama, seems as if you (and your pal Joe Biden) need a remedial course in American history.
The fact is that the telephone didn't exist in Lincoln's lifetime, so no one would be calling him up!
pfftttt!
Gregg is a joke. I watched his press conference and could not believe what a weenie this guy is. Getting him back is nothing to celebrate..I particularly liked the comment that he intended to carry Obamas water on many issues in the Senate..at least he said he was not going to run again
Gregg saw the light, realized what’s coming down the tunnel, and withdrew his nomination; read on to find out why!
Judd Gregg was useful to Obama’s pretense that he was the first “post-partisan” president; but he was a threat to the Democrats’ plan to slip sampling into the census. Therefore, Obama announced that he was stripping the census from Commerce.

“Actually, the MSM ran a story on whether Abe Lincoln was gay and racist and his wife was nuts.”
I have no idea if he was gay (that story got its legs by quoting one of Lincoln’s letters to a friend wherein he talked about sleeping in the same bed with him; however, it was not at all uncommon in those days for people of the same sex to share a bed, and it had no sexual connotation at all; thus, it is my conclusion from everything I’ve read about Lincoln that he was straight, but married to a lunatic), but he was a white supremacist. And his wife Mary Todd Lincoln was most definitely nuts.
Tha’s right ..... Barry the Rail Splitter.
I have a lot of friends, acquaintances and co-workers who have buyers remorse. My sister and her union lock step voting husband regret voting for him big time.
He’ll be out there talking it up till 2010 why it isn’t working and thats because of the lack of pub support.
“A man that insecure is very dangerous when given power.”
So very, very true.
“The fact is that the telephone didn’t exist in Lincoln’s lifetime, so no one would be calling him up!”
Uh, maybe two cups between a string?
Obama is a freak.
It was a harmless joke. Let’s not get caught up in ODS here.
We have enough legitimate things to criticize him on.
Within 4 years of Lincoln's inauguration, 600 000 Americans were dead and 1/3 of the nation was ruined.
As a proportion of the population, Obama will have to cause the deaths of >5 million Americans.
Let's hope he's not like Lincoln.
They are exactly the same except, Honest Abe was a Republican, White, and oversaw the greatest slaughter of man in our history. Other than that, they’re twins.
Pray for America, Our Troops and obama’s Guidance
I’ll bet there are already millions of Obama voters regretting their decision.

My guess is that those millions don’t have a clue as to what is happening. They are simply waiting for their handout(s).
Another Obama apologist. Excuse, no matter what he does or says or in what historical setting he shows his thin skin. He does need those to carry his water.
“There are certain things we can only do together. There are certain things only a union can do.”
Yeah, like drag our nation down to destruction.
This guy just thinks the s*** of himself doesn’t he?
Anyone who disagrees with his socialism is “petty” I guess.
What a punk ... another Shep Smith.
Interesting. 1854 was midway in the presidential term of Franklin Pierce, a northern Democrat with southern principles. Why Obama would choose this year, which would correspond politically to 2010, not 2009, is beyond me.
It was the year the Kansas-Nebraska Act passed, which restarted Lincoln's interest in national politics after almost a decade of non-involvement by opening the territories to the spread of slavery, erasing the Missouri Compromise of 1820.
I’ve been involved with FR for almost a decade now. I am an apologist for no one. If we start getting crazy, we marginalize ourselves.
I like to apply the “If Bush had done it, would I have cared?” test. If Bush had made a joke about having a hard time filling a cabinet position, I would have laughted it off. I’ll give Obama the same respect.
On the other hand, If Bush had tried to pass a near-trillion dollar pork-filled bill, I would have been extremely critical, as I am with Obama now.
Bambi believe me you are no Abraham Lincoln
I wish I could say that for my moonbat relatives, but they are still having an Obasm.
Thanks for the link. Printing out for tonight’s reading.
Sooner or later Obama will over-reach: it’s what he will get away with in the meantime that is scary!
I am no historian, but when was the Dept of Commerce opened?
Future generations that are paying for this mess will ask "what the heck were those fools thinking?"
The Emancipation Proclamation did nothing to make Obama’s presidency possible!!!
His mother was WHITE. His father was African.
HE HAS NO SLAVE HERITAGE!!!!!! Is he too stupid to realize this???
Obama has no allegiance other than to his next narcissistic movement. What has more importance is how he says something rather than what he says. In the rare event he is confronted by the media with his own contradictions, it is simply an annoyance, and they are content to accept his annoyance with no answer.
For him to associate the Lincoln birthday event with Gregg’s withdrawal is seems odd and out of place, but I can see the satisfaction he might get from it. Most people aren’t going know “there was no Commerce Dept. in Lincoln’s time,” but apparently it was important for him to make this dig.
He is cold ... his passion is negative. That’s not to say that trait isn’t useful, but I don’t think he cares much about being President of our 50 states (or is it 57 — whatever). Is his administration a finely-tuned unit running cleverly or is it running frantically out of control?
The denial of MSM is beyond anything i would have imagined. But my guess is it can’t go on indefinitely.
Interesting times.
He’s just another narcissistic politician from IL
Says President J. Ignorant Stumblebum
See #15
re#15 Tnx. Even if so, I do not like the MSM’s mentions of history to always be so negative. The sheeple hear/learn so little any more that when the press deigns to reflect on the past, their slant/relativism sickens me. *spit*
