MY CRYSTAL BALL ON GUN CONTROL
Pro-Gun New hampshire ^ | 02/16/2009 | Evan Nappen

Swami Evan looks into his crystal ball and what does he see as the most immediate threat to gun owners? It is NOT the anti-gunners "dancing in blood" of Blair Holt to push for national gun licensing and other extreme measures. It is NOT the renewal of the failed 1994 Assault Weapon Ban. It is NOT even the McCain-backed "Gun Show Loophole" fix. Although any or all of these might eventually be a fight, the real, immediate risk is an Executive Order "Gun Ban" by Obama.

On Thursday, February 12, Congressman Eliot Engel, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, wrote a letter signed by 53 Members of Congress urging President Obama to "return to enforcement of the law banning imports of assault weapons...

Already having trouble getting 7.62x39 ammo in many places.

I see some kind of exec order coming soon. Especially since the stimulus victory for the marxists. They are moving fast. consolidating power, finance and trade. We are literally counting down the weeks now I fear.

This is what I have been fearing, a proclamation by executive order. Why fight a battle in the Senate and the House, embarrassing oneself by having no bipartisan support, when one can just legislate with a stroke of the pen?

It is good to be king, sayeth the beast.

I also fear that the stroke of the pen will ban imports of all surplus ammo as "armor piercing" or "made for killing" and which "belongs only on the fields of war", etc.

So if you need any steel-cased calibers, get them now. The Obama Machine is moving fast.

“I hope I’m wrong, but I bet I’m right. So, stock up now on Eastern Bloc goodies, they won’t last long.”

I haven’t seen too many ‘goodies’ from the Eastern Bloc partner. So therefore I won’t be stocking up.

Well, if other data is to be believed, the firearms industry is one of the few that is doing well in this economy. Seems like we ought to be encouraging the growth...

OK, talked myself into it. I’ve been wanting a new AR...

It's not exactly THAT easy. Any such Executive Order has to be published in the Federal Register and from the moment of publication the Congress has 90 days to object. I suspect there are a number of democrats who would have quite a bit to say since they were elected on the basis of being pro-gun & pro-life from districts that previously went Republican for a good many years. The DNC turned a blind eye to their conservatism in order to take advantage of anger against GWB and capture the seat. But these freshmen congresscritters have been pretty outspoken on being pro 2nd Amendment. For example one had the temerity to demand that the administration's choice for American ambassador to the UN would resist any attempt by the UN to ram thru any sort of gun control treaties... Coulda knocked me over with a feather when I read that! Must be giving Pelosi and company a bad case of acid reflux!

From Engel's letter:

"...We ask that you direct ATF to act in accordance with the 1968 Gun Control Act and return to enforcing the ban on the import of all assault weapons, both those that are fully manufactured abroad as well as those imported as parts."

******************

IIRC, Bush 41 managed to do this without issuing an EO. At least, I can't recall ever seeing one (though it is commonly discussed in those terms). The '68 GCA gives ATF all the authority in needs to do this, the President just gives the nod.

As I posted in another thread, the anti-gun crowd was upset to see just how easily the letter of the law was complied with - and the guns, in various altered forms - kept on coming.

They also really didn't expect individuals with a bit of fabricating skills to start building their own firearm receivers and making those "spare parts kits" into functioning firearms, either - but as long as said parts kits are sold as "spare parts", the importers are complying with the law. It's tough to guess at how many full parts kits have been imported, but when they were cheap, people bought 'em by the dozens and just salted them away. Especially the AKs, but lots of FALs and HKs came in that way, too.

At this point, there aren't many third-world or former Soviet satellite armories left to plunder. Most of what was worth getting (and some barely worth the trouble) is already *here*. The Democrats would be wise to ponder that fact for a while.

Another point - the linked article mentions that the U.S gun manufacturers likely wouldn't complain about a stricter import ban. Well, no shiite, Sherlock. During George H.W. Bush's administration, American gunmakers *lobbied* for the import ban, then bent over for the magazine capacity restrictions and so on (one hand washes the other..).

If this is the extent of anti-gun actions we see from Obama, I'll eat my hat.

The gun control stuff wont start in earnest until there is a sufficiently tragic incident the ObaMaster’s minions can use as a rallying point.

"Stroke of the pen, law of the land. Pretty neat, huh?"

The only way this will not come to pass is if 3-5 million pissed off gun owners march on DC with pitchforks and torches, or 'other'.

You are absolutely correct. Back to the Clinton playbook. We'll get a two-for-one as well. If there's any way they can make it look like a 'right wing nut job' did it then they can attack guns and talk radio at the same time. Funny how no one ever tracked down John Doe #2 in Oklahoma, huh?
