Thatcher rants over 'PC Britain' (Margaret's Daughter Doesn't Like the PC crowd)
Metro UK ^ | 2/16/09

Carol Thatcher has hit back over her 'Golli-gate' sacking and compared Britain with communist East Germany. She refused to apologise for calling a French tennis player a 'golliwog' and claimed people were 'far too easily offended in modern society'.

'Ironically, it's like we're back 20 years ago before the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany,' she told Channel 5's The Wright Stuff.

Golliwogg

"..Golliwog as racist insult

...After the publication of Upton's first book, the term "golliwog" was used both as a reference to the children's toy and as a generic, racist term for Black people. In Britain and the Commonwealth, "golliwog" perhaps became "wog," a racial slur applied to dark-skinned people worldwide, including Africans, Southern Italians, Greeks and other Mediterranean people, Native Americans, Middle Easterners, Hispanics, and Indians.[3] In Australia many young people of Greek, Lebanese and other Mediterranean descent have adopted the name "wog" as a humorous identifier. An example of this from popular Australian culture is the 2000 movie The Wog Boy starring the popular actor Nick Giannopoulos..."

I’ve only heard it used in the song, “Toys” by XTC:

The Teddy bears swear the neighbourhood’s gone
Since the moving in of Golliwog

what is a golliwog?

a golliwog is a juvenile male cartoon character ‘in black-face’, usually neatly dressed with a bow-tie, shirt and jacket, and pants and shoes, that was used as branding on English jam, especially orange marmalade. The image has also been used on keychain fobs, souvenir plates, spoons and cups, and little dolls (male and female) were very popular. Years ago, golliwogs were considered ‘cute’ and ‘loveable’ (like the Pilsbury Dough Boy), and a good-luck charm, and was as widely recognized in England as America's own “aunt Jemima’ (pancake syrup character).

Okay, you limeys, what is a golliwog?

A golliwog was originally a 19th century black doll. They were popular through the mid 20th century. The term got "racialized" in the 1960's when black immigrants in Britain got referred to as "Wogs".

Robertson's Jam, a premier manufacturer in Britain used to call it's Bramble Seedless jam "Golliberry" and had a golliwog logo. In fact, children would collect a set of different "golliwogs" that were to be found under the lid of each jar and send them to Robertsons to receive an enamel "Golliwog" brooch.

The term "wog" was actually a collision of two terms; an abbreviation of "golliwog" and the continuation of an older colonial acronym for Wealthy Oriental Gentleman.
