A Dobson High School Advanced Placement government class with strong opinions about Barack Obama watched the president's speech Wednesday on a small, grainy TV in the corner of their classroom.
Some of the students attentively watched the speech, giving questioning looks and comments, shaking their heads and laughing at some of Obama's words. Other students listened, occasion ally glancing up to watch, while texting on their cell phones, reading a book or finishing school work.
The gymnasium's events were shown simultaneously in rooms throughout the Mesa school, and teachers were given discretion on whether to show the speech, the students said. The students in the class were hopeful things will work out but questioned whether Obama's plan would actually work to dig the country out of its economic woes. They also expected a longer speech.
Senior Syna Daudfar took some notes during the speech and was among the most vocally opposed to Obama's words.
At one point, when he talked about the costs of his stimulus plan, senior Maaike Albach and Daudfar looked at each other and said, "uh-oh."
"Overall I think it's a good idea, but he's not addressing the issues of the economic crisis," said Daudfar, a John McCain supporter who added he leans more toward being a moderate conservative. "The spending bill he just passed is just progressing the Democratic agenda rather than addressing the economic issues in the country."
Daudfar thinks Obama's plan is backward and deals with the "less important stuff" first. "Bailing out businesses" and "providing better regulatory systems for giving out money to businesses" should have been first, he said.

Well..that gives me hope for some kids....
When minds full of mush high school kids see right though this plan, you know it is full of holes.
Holy crap, a whole school of Republicans? I wasn’t aware such a place even existed.
I would love to find that shirt. It would totally piss off a libtard I work with.
New sod was laid in front of the school Tuesday, and Daudfar said, "The joke at the school is they're going to take it away when he (Obama) leaves."
Yeah, we’re in big trouble when high school kids are smarter than our president. :/
BTW, we do need to give kudos to their teacher Jeff Sherrer, apparently he does let them debate and come to their own conclusions, not forcing liberalism down their throats.
That's why it's full of Republicans.
In my very conservative district right outside of the teacher’s lounge is a big Obama, “Yes we can” sign. I called the principal about it, and he told me that it wasn’t political just showing support for the president, since he is our president. ?!?!
I asked, “Would you have put a “Mission Accomplished” sign up 3 years ago?” That was met with silence.
I’m not sure how to proceed with this.
Surprisngly, the kids keep putting “Nobama” post it notes on the lockers (the teacher are guarding the actual sign).
Cafe Press has all kinds of anti-Obama shirts. I think I saw the “Hitler gave great speeces, too” shirt.
"You're expelled Jimmy!"
Si te puedes.
the kool aid is becoming more and more diluted.
I want that shirt.
Well, they're the ones who are going to be saddled with Obama's deficit.
Hopefully, soon they will come to realize it...and I think they're gonna be p!ssed!
My senior year, I took an AP American History course. It was the best class, the best 42 minutes a day of my life. I learned so much about America that year that I never learned for the 11 years prior. However, there were only a few students (including myself) that took it seriously. Most took the class because passing the course gave you 8 college credits.
The ironic thing is that our teacher was a Democrat, but he was a Blue Dog and very pro-gun. He never tried to shut down opposing opinion. He encouraged debate. You could tell he just wanted one kid from each class to give him a solid argument, even if he didn’t agree. He was a fantastic teacher. He was the only reason I enjoyed my senior year.

All sites that sell that shirt!
contact the school principal and then contact the school board .
my sister had to do a similar act involving the school librarian. they pulled down the sign within minutes and issued a memo about no signs!
demand the sign be removed !
i would request my kid get reassigned too.
Shirt has a good message, but also a mixed one. I don’t want to flatter Hitler even if its unintended.
The real question is “Why is this breaking news?” Maybe we should start posting local traffic jams and bank robberies on breaking news. Oh wait, a bird just crapped on my car. Calling breaking news, calling breaking news...
Take a hike! It was headlined on a Drudge and I felt FReepers would appreciate a little GOOD News.
Go wash your car.
My kids’ middle school had a “silent protest” the day after the election and wrote “McCain/Palin” all up and down their arms.
Mesa is the heart of the Mormon community in the Phoenix Area, it’s where their temple is.
I have no idea why Obama would chose the location.
They didn't say it....but man....wouldn't it be great if they did!
Well click on it and get your credit card out!
Well, well...there actually IS hope. :-)
BTTT
Actually, that is the Mussolini pose.
bttt
The real question is why are you such a killjoy, Laby?
$27 for a T-shirt! Is this some sort of Obama plot to pay back the stimulus?
I would file a complaint saying that it was a campaign slogan and the campaign is over, that it is disingenuous to blur the line between campaign rhetoric and actual government policy. Otherwise, you want to see campaign slogans from ALL the candidates who got elected (assuming there was a conservative in the bunch.) Besides, all Obamateur is doing is saying “no, we can’t” these days as he talks down the economy.
Actually, that is the Mussolini pose....”
Yeah, it was the only pic I had to PhotoShop in a hurry.
That pose tells me everything I need to know about that punk.
Sheesh! What do you want, a friggin subsidy?
You can take one of your wife-beaters and draw your own tshirt in crayon for less, but not sure if it would give the right message.
The US History AP class is a standardized curriculum dictated by the College Board test.
Amazingly, it is actual US History. My son was surprised that, for the first time, he did not have to endure the usual victimology sequence—indians to slaves to immigrants to Japanese interment to civil rights, with nothing else in between.
He will tell you that it was the best course he took in 12 years.
The kids are trying to figure out how they will pay for this spending spree. It'll take them the next 45 years to pay off this thing.
“Dobson High School Advanced Placement government class with strong opinions about Barack Obama”
Change in class teacher and curriculum in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1....
As of 2005 when my daughter took it, and as of 1972 when I took the AP American History exam, passing the course was irrelevant to college credits. You had to take a nationally graded exam, and depending on the college they would give you one semester's course credit if you scored a 5 or sometimes a 4. But you couldn't get credits in your major - my daughter's 5s in Biology and Chemistry were all for naught, because she's a Bio major and can't use them. She did get to use her 5 in Calculus though. I couldn't use my 5 in American History either (daughter got a 4 - she takes after her dad the scientist - and her school doesn't give credit for 4s!).
If you don't take the AP course seriously, you won't get a 5 or the credits! (maybe the students like the teacher?)
My girlfriend’s kid told his mom a joke he learned at school yesterday:
What is the difference between Simba and Obama?
One is an African Lion, the other is a Lyin’ African.
I laughed.
I’m glad to hear that it still that way, even though I’m not far removed from high school.
If kids were offered classes that were based on fact and lessons were taught in the spirit of fair-mindedness, (most)students would be much more willing to learn and would come out far more educated. It’s sad that your son and I, with my experience, had to wait so long to get a class like that.
My senior year was when 9/11 happened...very interesting year needless to say. The AP American history class changed after that year because the teacher was generally liberal and a pacifist since he was a Brethren Christian. After 9/11, you could tell he wasn’t the same...didn’t know what he believed any more. The class really was hurt by that.
Especially in a very conservative district.
Unlike the teachers or the principal, the school board has to answer to the voters.
In the interest of charity (and also to document that you made the complaint), I would send the principal a letter first, reciting the facts of your earlier verbal complaint and explaining in nice neutral terms why this politicking on school property is wrong . . . .
Seriously, he probably was pretty depressed because his world-view was shattered. That would be bound to affect his teaching.
