Czech president compares EU to Soviet Union

BRUSSELS – The European Union has turned into an undemocratic and elitist project comparable to the Communist dictatorships of eastern Europe that forbade alternative thinking, Czech President Vaclav Klaus told the European Parliament on Thursday.

Klaus, whose country now holds the rotating EU presidency, set out a scathing attack on the EU project and its institutions, provoking boos from many lawmakers, some of whom walked out, but applause from nationalists and other anti-EU legislators.

Klaus is known for deep skepticism of the EU and has refused to fly the EU flag over his official seat in Prague during the Czech presidency, saying the country is not an EU province.

He said current EU practices smacked of communist times when the Soviet Union controlled much of eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic and when dissent or even discussions were not tolerated.

I suppose if anyone would know it would be somebody who grew up in the middle of the old Soviet Union.

If I had to move out of the US, I think my first choices of places to go would be the Czech Republic or Slovakia.

And Putin is warning US to eschew socialism as well. The former Warsaw Pact nations have a lot to teach the West about capitalism.

Fortunately the Brussells Nomenklatura is strong on bureaucracy, rules, and conformity, but hasn’t yet put its own KGB in place, or Klaus would probably find himself stabbed with a poisoned umbrella tip for saying this.

I think what should have happened was Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary should have formed their own bloc. Then as a bloc they could have made some agreements with the EU, but it would have given them a lot more leverage.

Klaus is also a huge global-warming denier.

The Totalitarian Left hates him for this. They'll stop at nothing to destroy him.

Euroskeptic Tory MPs in the UK were making the same points years ago, referring to “the Soviet EUnion.”

I agree and I think they should elect this guy as their representative:

Seriously though, I think those countries that suffered the most at the hands of the old Soviet Union are in the best position to realize when communists (a.k.a. socialists in a hurry) are making a comeback. They lived and survived it they know what they are talking about.

Vaclav Klaus deserves props for calling EU the “Soviet Union”. It is leaning more and more that way

Klaus also believes Global Warming is a Fraud. A smart man who isn’t a sucker for liberal stupidity

Can we trade Presidents with Czech Republic? Will throw in a few “Cabinet positions to be named later”, and, even pay Obamster’s salary.

And...when I was in Prague in 2006...I almost got ran over by Klaus’s motorcade. I consider that an honor
