RNC chair plans 'off the hook' campaign

(CNN) — Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele says his party is going to launch an "off the hook" public relations campaign that will update the GOP’s image by translating it to "urban-suburban hip-hop settings."

The new GOP leader told the Washington Times that the party’s defeat in states such as North Carolina and Virginia made it clear they needed a new approach.

“We need messengers to really capture that region — young, Hispanic, black, a cross section…” he said in an interview published Thursday. “We want to convey that the modern-day GOP looks like the conservative party that stands on principles. But we want to apply them to urban-surburban hip-hop settings.”

He added, jokingly, that “we need to uptick our image with everyone, including one-armed midgets.”

I agree with your assertion regarding an image makeover and actually believe you did a great job capturing the current image of a typical GOPer however I'm not sure this is the way to go...

I hope he understands the minds of young blacks and the ghetto blacks who have been taught to hate from day one.

I preferred Blackwell, but I figured I'd give Steele a chance.

Well, he's had his chance. Looks like I'm done with the GOP for a few more years.

I don't think of the GOP as hip hop and urban either, but I'm open to hearing him out. I'm taking a class on women-owned business development, and I'm finding it interesting to see the cross section of budding entrepreneurs. There are many minority women, and quite a few young women in their 20's. Small business owners are a natural constituency for the GOP, and they don't all look like middle-aged white men.

There is a large segment of the population which has every right to feel betrayed by the recent electoral phenomenon. Guilt over race and ethnic identity were cynically employed to "anoint" an unqualified man of highly questionable loyalty. For descendants of slaves who have learned, worked, saved, lived their faith, and played by the rules, this is perhaps a bigger slap in the face than for anyone else. I believe this is an excellent time for the GOP to tap into bedrock values and refresh the look of the party. Values unite us, and it needs to be made clear to people that the Democrat party does not honor MLK's vision of a color-blind society. It cynically uses color to divide us, to create envy and to seize power over us all.

Hardly anyone pandered to illegal Hispanics more than McCain - even more than Obama. Yet they still preferred Obama.

Anyone who is for illegal aliens will not protect this country.

Does he really think rappin’ out family values, a work ethic, and personal responsibility is going to hit home with hip-hop fans? Highly unlikely.

This is what is partly wrong with the Republican party right now. Steele is looking to reach a different demographic to educate them on what is wrong with the politics that they are voting for. Instead of supporting his plan in trying to do something different and change the look of the RNC to attract voters, many of you are acting like the party is a stuck up Golf Club that won’t let anyone else join unless they look like you! Come on, after this last election obviously something needs to change and Steele is trying to do that. Step out of your comfort zone and try supporting him.

Everyone here should check out this video (and others by the same guy). This guy on the video CAN make hip-hop work for the GOP.

It doesn’t matter how we do it.......AS LONG AS WE REMAIN TRUE TO OUR CONSERVATIVE VALUES!

Pandering to groups because of their ethnic background or color of their skin is not conservative.

We all need to tap into some machosauce. I hope Steele uses this idea.

Our ideas are not outdated, they need to be pounded in day after day.

Not time to give up, just ime to update the message in a different package. It is called marketing. A positive one.

Obama is selling further misery, poverty, and death, as though it is a good thing. Time to get the word out that it does not have to be that way!

Quick drill a hole in the bottom of the boat, so the water can run out, else we will sink.

Uh, just what do you think he is changing? Doing the same thing, using yhe internet will give us the same result, maybe worse.

Forget the pandering that Steele is contemplating.

This map holds the key to GOP Conservative resurgence. But in a way not quite thought out. So let’s attempt to think it through.

The Constitution allows 3/4 of States to ‘compel’ Congress to do just about anything. The process is called ‘Memorializing Congress’.

That means 38 Red States can control the game. For sure there would be court fights but in the end the SCOTUS would have to do the bidding of 38 states.

This tact translates to building coalitions on a state-by-state basis until 38 or more state legislatures are behind Conservatives.

Otherwise barring a complete rebuff and buyer’s remorse by voters against the Obama Administration and the Dem Congress, there is effectively no real power that Conservatives can wield. They will continue to be shut out of meetings and their access will be restricted only to those that tow the Dem line (e.g. Spector, Collins, Snowe).

Your thoughts appreciated.

You never know.

If gay marriage or abortion were to ever become a big issue in the campaign, particularly gay marriage, Republicans could look to get a lot more of the minority vote.

The simple fact is the demographics of america now and in the future will make it impossible for Republicans to win the Presidency without picking up more black and latino voters.
