Hazleton mayor lights fire under county GOP (Lou Barletta in Allegheny County)
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | 2/19/09 | Mike Wereschagin

Conservative is the new liberal, Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta told a crowd of Allegheny Republicans on Wednesday night.

Just as Democratic politicians once distanced themselves from the liberal label, many Republicans now are worried about being called conservatives, Barletta said, speaking to about 350 party members at Green Tree Radisson. The annual Spirit of Lincoln Dinner raised more than $15,000 for the county party.

"Now, 'conservative' has become the new 'liberal' in the American political lexicon," Barletta said.

Coming off two punishing election cycles in which Republicans lost control of the U.S. House, Senate and White House, the party must begin working on rebounding immediately, he said.

"We need to start rebuilding this party, and we need to do it starting this year," Barletta said.

He drew applause when he said the party brought its current woes on itself. He blamed politicians of both parties for excessive partisanship that he said has caused many Americans to lose faith in government.

Barletta cautioned against trying to regain power by rebranding Republicans as anything other than a conservative party.

"Some believe the key to our future lies in moderating," he said. "With all due respect, those who believe that could not be more wrong."

As evidence, he cited Sen. John McCain's loss to President Obama in November, which he said was brought about because McCain didn't excite the conservative base.

Barletta would have won had he got GOP support. McCain and the GOP value the rights of illegal aliens over the rights of Americans.

Barletta, if he runs again for Congress, he will win. He wont have McCain as baggage

We need this guy on the national scene.

Wouldn’t you know he was in my neighborhood last night and I missed it? I knew in advance but forgot.

(Plus tickets were $65 . . . )

Couldn’t agree more...

We saw what the uber leftist version of a Republican could do on November 4th, 2008. That tactic has been tried. Stick a fork in RINOs, their days are done in this party.

I tried to contact him a few weeks ago, but no luck.

I’ll try again.

I'd like to see him run for governor.

He ruled out the Senate saying he has a good working relationship with Specter.

He almost whipped Kanjorski. How the hell that crook keeps getting re elected is beyond me.

I realize that there is still a lot of time until Kanjorski’s re-election in 2010, but I feel that there are several factors NOW that weren’t present last fall, which will cause Kanjorski to have an even MORE difficult run.

First, Kanjorski was firm about his committment to B. Hussein, and told us on the Channel 44 debate that if BHO won, the area would benefit. If BHO continues to screw the middle class as it seems like he’s doing now, this could backfire and cause sentiment to go against Kanjo and BHO.

Second, with the corruption with the Luzerne County judges, the prevailing attitude may shift to an anti-incumbent/anti-corruption trend, in which case Kanjorski would NOT benefit.

Third, if the economy continues spiralling downward, Kanjorski will be tied to this, as he is chairman of the House Capital Markets Subcommittee.

There is hope....

Good analysis and I sincerely hope you're right.

Anti incumbent fever is probably the only way to get rid of Kanjorski and others like him. But I am amazed at the political ignorance of otherwise intelligent people.

I know pro life conservative people who voted for Obama because "Bush screwed things up so bad." Never mind that Bush wasn't running and he had a lot of help.

I'm in the 10th and Carney voted for the stimulus which goes against what the majority in the 10th could possibly want. Pre election Carney voted against the bailout. He must think in 2 years people will forget. A good republican can defeat him.

Yeah there is. there was a letter to the editors in the Pittsburgh Putz Gayzette that had a letter from Elsie Hillman telling the GOP to dump Pro Lifers from the party.
And that is a Alleghent Republican.
