There is one huge step our Congressmorons could take which would turn the economy around very quickly: Elimination of the federal income tax for both individuals and businesses, replacing it with a national sales tax. This would end the socialistic engineering of the tax regulations and give people clarity about their future tax obligations. It would eliminate the spending of billions of dollars non-productively, just to comply with existing tax laws. A national sales tax would be fair, since those who have greater assets and earn more, also spend more; so they would pay a higher percentage of taxes than people with lower income.
Another great step Congress could initiate would be the elimination of mark-to-market accounting, in favor of historical cost accounting. This would significantly help financial institutions with capital requirements, thereby increasing available credit.
But our Socialist president and Congress are highly unlikely to take either of the above steps. They would rather increase welfare entitlements, tinker with the existing federal tax code, and rant about the failure of greedy businessmen. The current economic mess was caused by government interference in lending standards, with the aim of increasing the number and amount of mortgage loans made to low income borrowers. Now the same socialist clowns are telling us that the solution is more government. As Ronald Reagan said, government is not the solution; government is the problem.
There is only one “fair” tax. That is the land tax as advocated by Henry George over 100 years ago.
Elaborate please?
I think the prebate ought to be taken out of the Fair Tax Act, as it still requires a database to be kept of how much people are earning, while also distributing welfare to those that don’t pay taxes.
Get that eliminated from the Bill, and you’ll see more people jump on board the Fair Tax train. Including some FReepers against it.
If Fair Tax is not preceded by a repeal of the with holding we will end up with TWO TAXES!
So NO to Fair Tax until withholding is ended.
In his masterpiece “Progress and Poverty” George showed that most of the world’s problems were caused by governments granting monopolies for land use which we call “Real Property Ownership.” In order to redress this problem, he proposed a tax on land (not on the improvements on the land), which returns the value of this monopoly to the community. This tax would replace all others.

Don’t forget the hidden tax paid from inflation as a result of poor monetary policy. (Thanks Federal Reserve.)
thank you mr obvious
i think everyone who has read Neal Boortz’s book realises that must be done first.
I live in Jacksonville, and I’ll be there, with FRiends!
The “Georges Tax” is really a joke.
I agitate for elimination of all property taxes. They are too damn subjective and subject to manipulation, cronyism and favoritism.
What the US really needs, at the local, state and federal level is a consumption tax.
FairTax is just the beginning!
The prebate is in the legislation solely to allow tax-FRee purchase of necessities of life, for all consumers. It is based on family size, not earnings. Read the legislation, please.
Since you are familiar with George, please tell us what you find “a joke”?
What I really want is a FairTax at 26% consumption tax level, where 21% goes to the Federal government and 5% back to the states. That way, the income tax can be removed even at the state level.
