Well, I will take small offense at the American Hindu part. I don’t know any violent *American* Hindus. I was born a Hindu, and converted recently to Christianity. Now, I will agree that I do not know 100% of my ancestors’ religion — but I don’t recall any troubling passages in the Vedas like the Koran has. I also do not know of any prophet in Hinduism that claimed he got verses from Satan like Mohammad.
Though, overseas Hindus have been quite a problem as of late. Especially with their persecution of Christians in India.
As for American Muslims, that seems to be a mixed bag. On the one hand you have very peaceful “cafeteria Muslims” like my sister-in-law and her family, and on the other hand you have Muslims like this murderer who beheaded his family, and organizations like CAIR, Nation of Islam and Saudi sponsored mosques, etc...
Tough problems to solve. And one that will only get worse with Premier Obama at the helm.
This killing has NOTHING to do with Islam.
It is a hate crime to even imply that. This was simply the logical conclusion of a small domestic argument.

Why Hindus?
Over the years, Hindus have probably been the recipient of more muslim violence than any other group of people.
The muslims are responsible for the naming of the mountain range, the Hindu Kush. Hindu Kush means Slaughter of the Hindus, an act inflicted on vast number of Indian slaves who perished in passing its snows while being taken to be sold in the Middle East and Europe by Islamic conquerors.
Most Hindus that I have met are exceptionally peaceful people.

The crime was so brutal, shocking and rife with the worst possible stereotypes about their faith that some U.S. Muslims thought the initial reports were a hoax.

I totally disagree. I do not want to give the government the power to punish or deport people for their beliefs. Only for criminal acts that infringe on another person’s rights.
While I am a Christian and therefore “anti-Islam” in the sense that I oppose Islamic beliefs as being un-Biblical, un-Christian, and blasphemous, I refuse to accept the idea that Islam is an inherently violent religion. Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Shintos, and Jews all had such things said about them, and they turned out to be untrue.
The need to prosper in a market economy is what forces religions to adapt and become less radical, less violent. That’s the answer. Not more war or division. If the entire Middle East was made up of stable free market economies, there would be no wars there. Jews and Muslims could hate eachother all they wanted to but they’d still be forced by market realities to cooperate and get along.

I hear this often in "defense" of Islam but I can only think of some sects of Hindus who have such a thing. Most religions had a period of time when women were treated harshly or inequitably. However, the extreme of Islam seems unique.
Adding my .02 - Muslims and Hindus are worlds apart, and Hindus have suffered torture, genocide, and slavery from the Muslims since before 1000 AD.
Muslim culture is parasitic, and it always results in the killing of its host.
