A Minnesota man is okay after being hit by bullet fragments after a security guard's gun accidentally discharged.
The shooting has been ruled an accident, but it did involve an off-duty Minneapolis police officer. He was working as a security guard at the gun show, when police say his gun holster got caught and his gun went off.
The bullet from his gun ricocheted off the floor and hit a retired St. Paul officer in the leg. Police say the retired officer was not working at the event and was there as a spectator. He was treated on the scene for minor injuries and will be okay.
"Something like this, it's purely an accident. We've got the -- [we're] checking the holster to see if there's any malfunctions, checking the gun to see if there's any other malfunctions," said Sgt. Jesse Garcia with the Minneapolis Police Department.
"You know, with the amount of equipment we wear sitting in cars with seatbelts and things like that, we're lucky this doesn't happen more often," he added.
The security guard will not be disciplined. Police say he was sitting down and leaning back in a chair when his holster got caught and the gun discharged.
Only "security experts" are allowed. These shows are more peaceful than the Saturday morning checkout lines at the local grocery store.
I don't know why the feel the need to carry with one in the pipe....
Hmmm Anybody wanna bet it was a Glock????
Because having to chamber a round takes more time than you might have when you need to use your weapon, that’s why.
That said, five bucks says it was really a holstering accident.
Thank God we have all this law enforcement making sure there is no shenanigans at gun shows /s
Um, no, because it could have been a S&W M&P, a SigPro, an H&K....
Doesn’t have to be a Glock any more - but even before Glocks, idiots used to have holstering discharges... with REVOLVERS!
The irony is so think, I don’t know if we could cut it with a chainsaw.
The irony is so _thick_, I don’t know if we could cut it with a chainsaw.
First shooting that I’ve every heard of at one of these shows here......
That’s quite a headline. I proposed a graphic for a banner against those who created the hideous trade imbalances and tried to cover those with the mcmansion housing bubble, unbacked derivatives, and so on. Many of the same schemers are pushing to ban firearms for us commoners.
The graphic is that of a burning house—great for flags, bumper stickers, site banners, etc.
Anybody want to bet that the off-duty officers' story is complete BS?
Please be factual. These were policement, not security experts ...
But remember folks, it's the "civilians" who can't be trusted with firearms....
The grip safety on the 1911A1 (which I used to carry) would keep something like this from happening, IF it occurred as described. The DA decocking lever and hammer bar on the Sig Sauer P245 (which I carry now) ditto.
I have the feeling it didn't happen as described though. I used to work for the Atlanta PD in my misspent youth, and most of the officers treated their service sidearm (in those days, .357 Mag revolvers with "Reggie Pellets" - .38 Special wadcutters) as just another tool, like a nightstick or a radio. You don't get good by qualifying once a year at the police range. Most were at best marginally competent, except for the ones who also were sport shooters. The regular competitor in combat pistol was the only one who could outshoot me -- a 16 year old girl with her mother's .32 S&W revolver.
Odds are this guy was fooling around with the firearm when it discharged.
I find the title interesting. If it had been anyone but a police officer who did it, the headline would have tarred the offendor. But they knew taking guns from police officers ala London is going too far

Cop shoots cop, it is to be expected. They carry too much gear. Maybe they should reduce their gear by at least one pistol.
LOL, IncPen. Poor Barn. ;-)
How about checking for operator malfunctions? Or do their cops check in their brains, but not their weapons, when they go off duty?
