ZURICH, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) called on Saturday for retaliation against the United States over a U.S. tax probe into the country's biggest bank UBS that threatens prized banking secrecy.

The populist SVP, the country's biggest party, said Switzerland should not take in any detainees from the U.S. prison for terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, which the Swiss government said last month it could consider to help shut the camp down.

The Swiss are the ultimate profiteers. Throughout history they’ve sat on the sideline picking up the scraps from the World’s misfortunes. The ultimate in National Amorality IMO.

AS a person who has done business and negotiated contracts over most the world, I found the Swiss one of the biggest demanders of Bribes, France tied with them, UK folds were st right but Bureaucratic.

East US you had to deal with contractors under the control of the Mob, which has since moved into the White House

Just out of curiosity... did the Swiss take in refugees during WW2?

In the 80’s I was doing business all over Asia and was pretty much used to corruption at every step. I was relieved to get back to the US in the early 90’s, looking forward to being able to conduct business on its merits.

Boy, was I in for a surprise. What I found was the level of corruption at levels that approached those of Jakarta. As far as I can see it has only gotten worse, seeming to have been ‘Mainstreamed’ like so many other things that a mere 20 years ago would have been unthinkable and destroyers of careers.

US Law should stop at the US border. If the Swiss government and financial institutions do not stand united to protect Swiss law and financial privacy, the US will pick them off one by one by using US courts to threaten their correspondent banking relationships.

The US is going after rich US taxpayers. They’ll go after the middle class afterwards. So much for Obama wanting to make friends with the rest of the world! He makes nice with the monsters in the Middle East and gets all our allies pissed off. Sounds like Carter redux.

In Jakarta, the corruption is so bad that locals have the guile to issue you a RECEIPT for bribes (for tax purposes).

I am glad someone in der Schweiz has b*lls. They should NOT have let us take them to the woodshed like that. They are a sovereign nation and should be able to run their banking the way they like.

(Disclaimer - I lived in Switzerland for a decade and have a lot of fondness for my home away from home.)

No country that I know of is innocent of horrible morality in WW2. There were many good Swiss who saved Jews, probably more than bankers who profited from Nazi money.

The Swiss have made a lot of choices in order to stay neutral and unique. It helped them not be indebted to world bodies. Think of the pressure they resisted from the EU.

They are a good people.

Hey there -- their AF flies in the ALPS - they are quite good. Their military service is serious. It's a tiny country and their permanent militia is ready at any time.

What I remember hearing is that every male over 18 trained with the militia and had to maintain a weapon at home well into middle age.....good folk.

These tax crazed US bureaucrats are simply putting on this show to stir up resentment among the proles.....actual collections will be negligible

Folks, capital will go to whatever place that treats it well. It’s as simple as that.

Why is there a need for rich people to hide their wealth and not use it here in America where it could possibly be used for investment and job creation ?

It’s because they get CONFISCATED, mostly for social engineering.

Why not create policies that treat capital well ?

How about a millionaire’s green card where rich people who put their money in the USA and create jobs get a fast track to permanent residency ?

I betcha ( apologies to Sarah ), capital will flown IN to the USA if they are treated well here by the government.
