Report: Gitmo meets Geneva standards - left is disappointed
The American Thinker ^ | February 21, 2009 | Rick Moran

It's from our own military which will probably discredit it with the loons on the left but a report requested by President Obama about conditions at Guantanamo prison shows that they meet the requirements set down by the Geneva convention - just as President Bush requested:

Defense attorneys for the detainees have complained bitterly about the isolation of some prisoners. They allege that over several years, it has led to mental problems for some detainees. The lawyers also have criticized the force-feeding of prisoners on hunger strike. About 40 prisoners are now on hunger strike, according to Pentagon officials.

Walsh concluded that force-feeding, which involves strapping detainees to special chairs and inserting a tube through one nostril and into their stomachs, is in compliance with the Geneva Conventions' mandate that the lives of prisoners be preserved, according to the government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the report publicly.

Walsh also found that prisoners should be allowed more communal recreation and prayer time. Prisoners in Camp 6 and the highly secret Camp 7 -- which holds such high-value detainees as Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the self-proclaimed organizer of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks -- can be held in windowless cells for up to 22 hours a day.

What - no electric shocks? No waterboarding? What kind of an American military prison is this, anyway? At least one "human rights group" is not pleased:

Civil liberties groups, including the Center for Constitutional Rights, which is about to issue a report on conditions at the prison, challenged Walsh's findings.

"We do think conditions are in violation of U.S. obligations to treat prisoners humanely, and prisoners are at a physical and mental breaking point,"

I wonder if His Excellency will still be keen to close it, given this report’s findings.

If he does close GITMO, he still has the problem of where to put the terrorists. If instead he leans on the report and says “this changes things” then problem solved.

That's probably why he had this report drafted. Obama knows he won't be able to bring any Club Gitmo detainees to US soil without a major fight and a great political cost to him.

Prisoners in Camp 6 and the highly secret Camp 7 .... can be held in windowless cells for up to 22 hours a day.

Solitary confinement and isolation are common means of protecting the lives and safety of other prisoners and guards, as is done at the Florence ADX Supermax in Colorado (where many convicted jihadis are held including Ramsi Yousef):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADX_Florence#Prison_facility

"... Most individuals are kept for at least 23 hours each day in solitary confinement. They are housed in a 7 ft (2.13 m) by 12 ft (3.66 m) room, built behind a steel door and grate. The remaining free hour is spent exercising alone in a separate concrete chamber. Prisoners seldom see one another, and the inmates' only direct human interaction is with correctional officers."

In which case he is likely to try to take the credit for “cleaning GITMO up” — that would be the sensible thing for him to do. Two birds with one stone.

I too dont believe in force feeding pisoners. If they wish to starve , who are we to say they cannot. I would eat my lunch every day where they could see me . Mental problems. They are Muslims, that goes without saying.

Were he keen to close Guantanamo Bay, he would have done so. His executive "order" was nothing but a campaign promise, no different than his freely mouthing off during the election. He gave himself a year to do it. That schedule will slip further, past 2010 and probably past 2012.

It's just talk.

Too bad he can’t put Maggie Thatcher in charge of Gitmo. She knew how to break a hunger strike.

GITMO caused the prisoners to have mental problems? I doubt it. The mental problems were caused by the demonic oppression of their religion.

Pork is a good food to forcefeed a Gitmo detainee. (sarc)
