Ridiculed for Phelps investigation, official hits back in teasing speech

Critics have accused Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott of trying to grab his 15 minutes of fame while investigating U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

So Monday, Lott took a few of those minutes — to ridicule the comedians, dopers and pundits who lampooned his probe of the gold medalist, shown in a newspaper photo with a marijuana bong at a Columbia party.

Donning a messy blond wig — a nod to Newsweek’s error in describing him as having blond hair — a bulletproof vest and three bronze medals, Lott set the record straight at a Columbia Rotary meeting, to standing ovations.

Seeking publicity because a sports figure was photographed holding a pipe but not actually smoking was bad enough

Arresting 8 people without evidence and then having to drop the charges was way over the top.

Now the Sheriff appears to have lost his mind. The full video is at the link but still gives a summary.

that sure is my impression but maybe he knows his local audience - the article says the rotary club gave him a standing ovation.

Not only is this guy a looney toon, but he's also apparently a pretty sorry law enforcement officer who picks easy targets for publicity rather than bothering to fight real crime:

"It seems to me that Richland County has a host of its own crime problems much more serious than a kid featured in a photograph with a bong in his hand." said lawyer Joseph McCulloch, whose client was charged with possession of marijuana and questioned by investigators.

McCulloch is right, of course. The latest FBI statistics show violent-crime rates for Columbia - part of Richland County - were nearly three times higher than the national average and nearly twice as high as those for the state. For purposes of comparison, the only jurisdiction with a higher violent crime rate than South Carolina was Washington, D.C.

If he were my sheriff, I’d be wondering why he such a wig in the first place.

And I’d kind of wonder why he chose bronze medals - that’s not even a good Phelps imitation.

Plus, while I don’t doubt that Phlps is a nice guy, he’s always been kind of a dweeb - and this makes him into a hero of the counter culture.
