Senate votes to give DC citizens vote in Congress

District of Columbia when it became the nation's capital two centuries ago would be granted under legislation the Senate passed Thursday.

Congress is "moving to right a centuries-old wrong," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid shortly before the 61-37 vote.

The House is expected to pass the measure with a strong majority next week and President Barack Obama, a co-sponsor when the bill failed to clear the Senate two years ago, has promised to sign it.

The measure is likely to face a court challenge immediately after becoming law; opponents argue that it is unconstitutional because D.C. is not a state and does not qualify for representation.

DC should become part of Maryland.

If SCOTUS does not strike this down, the result of MD annexing the DC territory would be that MD gets an extra Dem seat, and DC keeps its Dem seat, net +2 D.

It’s also important to remember that in 1798 Senators were appointed by their state legislatures and not directly elected. But I think the point was that they realized that the impeachment process was useless because they couldn’t do anything other than remove him from office which they had the power to do by themselves anyway.

I believe Rinovich is already stated he is not seeking re-election.

Perfect. Send it, you don’t have to sign your name. It’s perfect, time to stop being nice, they don’t care and that makes them think we are all weak.

d.c. once occupied part of virginia. this part was returned to virginia after the civil war.

if d.c. wants representation, it should be returned to maryland.

Exactly !! -— This will NEVER be heard by SCOTUS for the same reason SCOTUS refused to require that President Obama PROVE that he is a U.S. Citizen.
