GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A massive rally in downtown Greenville on Friday to protest government spending was started by the rant of a reporter in Chicago.
Several thousand people flocked to the banks of the Reedy River to re-enact a uniquely American form of political speech. The crowds dumped tea into the river, evoking memories of the Boston Tea Party of 1773.
"They're not like putty in our hands," said CNBC on-air personality Rick Santelli. "This is America! How many of you people want to pay for your neighbors' mortgages, that has an extra bathroom and can't pay their bills? We're thinking about having a Chicago tea party in July. All you capitalists that wanna show up at Lake Michigan, I'm gonna start organizing."
Santelli's words spurred thousands to take action across the country, and about 2,000 in Greenville alone.
"I'm sick and tired of it," said protester Barbara Keeton. "That's my money. That's my grandchildren's future. It's down the toilet."
Protesters said they were angry over the billions spent by Congress and the billions more on the table.
"No one looked at it, no one read it, no one had any clue what was in it except, of course, for the guys who prepared it," said protestor Joshua Schatzle.
"The debt that Obama's got, is way higher now, less than 100 days after he's been in office," Keeton said.
The protesters vented through signs, chants and tea.
Carl Clegg said he got the idea to start the party less than a week before it occurred.
"We're giving the opportunity for people in the area to come out and say, 'I do not approve of what's going on in Washington,'" said Clegg, of the Upstate Young Republicans.
In a few days, it grew to a size that amazing organizers and observers.
"I'm not exactly supportive of everything that's going on, but I think it was a great display of what you can do in America," said onlooker D.J. Harris.
The rally was one of at least a dozen tea party protests scheduled planned in major cities on Friday. Many more are scheduled over the next few months all across America.
Here’s a bump.Pics?

Crowd converges at Liberty Bridge to protest stimulus plan
For this to work though, it would take millions of us to get on board.
Wow!!! Great turnout!!!!!
I’ve been trying to convince Mres FlashBack that we need to move away from this Iowa winter weather....SC sure looks like the place to go!
Please tell me someone got pictures of this...
...Only 4 more long months until I FINALLY get to go to Greenville for good and leave this socialist hellhole!
It was a great turn out. It was raining all day, the weather turn nice just before the protest.
BTTT
Lots of links from all over the country assembled on this thread.

There was supposed to have been a gatering here in Iowa at Davenport and maybe DesMoines...I haven’t seen any After-Action-Reports yet. Gotta go look for those and see how they did...stuck at work today.

“H”, Those individuals that wrote the bill probably only knew what their assigned portion of the bill was about. I’d believe nobody, I mean nobody knew everything included within that massive text.
There should have been one month at least to read and digest a bill that size, then debate the content before voting on it. Totally improper procedure. The American people understandably are seriously angry.
The whole lot of those voting for this should be drug out of the Capitol by their heels and strung up.
Beautiful! Thank you and thanks to your daughter!
Lots of Gadsden flags there...nice to see like-minded folk even if I can’t be there. Hope I can get down there and make the next one! :)
That’s a right fair crowd. Notice all the folk on top of the bridge in the background.
Sorry, I wasn’t there. Greenville is a three-four drive from Aiken.
It is.Move the young people up for the shot. This is for the pros-if we have any left in PR Dept.in the Rep.Party.
Didn’t happen. This is all photoshopped Obama rally images and bloggers’ dreams.
If it had really happened, then Perky Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and Brian Williams would have been fist figting in the streets for the privilege of being the first to tell me all about it.
Remember: “If we didn’t broadcast it, it wasn’t news!”

When is the March on Washington? How about May 30, 2009 the last Saturday of May.
You have every reason to be proud! Thank you for showing me the pictures...it’s the next best thing to being there. :)
i am so computer ignorant! My computer will not let me on your site to see the pix. Anyhow, congrats! I went to my tea party here in NC! :)
We are too few and too scattered (and too frozen and snowed under) to have any effective action here. AFAIK, the nearest rally to us would have been Cheyenne, WY, about 250 miles away...and I'm about 50 miles closer than the next-nearest SD FReeper I know of.
Way 'yonder above my pay grade to make a call like that. I'm just trying to hem up some of the links and threads in one place so it will be convenient to find, and build a ping list. With a bunch of scattered threads, many of us FReepers miss stuff.

Tea Party protests stimulus plan
I am Fire Up, let’s march on Washington!!!!
If you think this something to get fired up about, just wait until they start trying to grab guns, because its coming, slowly at first, but the movement is already starting! America, please wake up!! Our country is being taken away quietly, because the media is not on our side!!
...Only 4 more long months until I FINALLY get to go to Greenville for good and leave this socialist hellhole!
That's where it's at. We are holding down here in the deep South and are locked and loaded ready for the big reaction coming soon enough. Plenty of good churches and fine people around here, and if you like to party, we call it GVegas. Something for everyone, but still with that slow, sweet southern style. We even have a pretty good economy still going. I guess hard work really does pay off.
Love it WOOOOHOOOO..Bump to Pics.:)
Oh, these people make me so proud.
Thank you Rick Santelli and thank you real Americans.
That is EXCELLENT. “Handy Stimulus Flow chart.” “Here’s $15. Please buy a flat screen TV.” BWAAAhahahahaha!
Boy. Those pics bring tears to my eyes. Thanks for posting them. God bless America.
That is a great flowchart!
I really don’t want to file my return this year. We’ve already paid through our paychecks.
We had an Outstanding crowd - local news is reporting the turn out was in the 1000’s. I am proud to be from Greenville, SC. Last night, I saw history in the making. This was the first time in the my life I ever protested for something but it will not be my last time. In just five days, Greenville turns out thousands, we can make a difference.
I had a great time for this great cause. My son and I attended and I got to finally introduce him to Russ Castle, my buddy at WORD Radio. It was the bonding of true Americans.
The rally was a success as the thousands sent a message to Washington for their over boated spending sprees. This was a symbolic tea party and no we didnt spend a lot of money on tea. Americans who work hard for their freedom needed to send this message and anyone that feels this was silly most likely has their hand out. We will no longer sit back and watch as a socialist government steals from the hard working man to pay for the dead beats wanting dependence on their government who by the way is the taxpayers. Hope and change? I hope we still have change for a buck after the smoke clears. Obama, this is America, not the USSA. God Bless the true Americans
It made me proud to. I’ve spent most of my life here, but i’ve been around the world. Greenville is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and a bastion of what the forefathers envisioned in the Constitution. But its fading quickly. We are being overrun by liberals from the places they have already destroyed.
South Carolina has always been a bit of a rebellious state. In fact, they dumped tea in the Charleston harbor in support for the men in Boston during the real Tea Party. Remember Ft. Sumter :-)We already had enough of the Lincoln way of government a long long time ago. We have produced great warriors of tyranny like Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion and Andrew Jackson. (North Carolinians also claim Jackson because it was a frontier border where he was born. Jackson claimed he was born in a cabin in South Carolina)
While i abhor the idea of slavery (we are paying for the sins of our fathers), I often wonder how the Confederacy would have compared to the Union. A large part of the South has managed to retain the independence and spirit that men like Madison and Jefferson and Adams and Hamilton understood. Liberty.

Our standard is the Word of God and the US Constitution. The Founders fought for liberty...let us follow in their example.
How do I post a picture please?
