Ethnic minority pupils race ahead of poor white classmates in schools

Immigrant pupils are overtaking many white children at school because their families place more value on education, a key Government adviser has said.

Rapid progress was being made by children from Chinese, Bengali and Indian backgrounds, while white working-class boys, in particular, were struggling, according to Sir Mike Tomlinson, the former head of Ofsted.

In controversial comments which will raise questions about the focus of Government funding, Sir Mike said that white working-class parents failed to place the same value on education as their ethnic minority counterparts.

As a result, poor white children have low expectations of what they can achieve, leading to lack of effort and low results.

"We are seeing every ethnic group progress rapidly – Chinese, Bengali, Indian," said Sir Mike. "The results that are being achieved are higher and this has improved the numbers applying to university and entering professions such as medicine, veterinary science, law and accountancy.

Some critics have argued that funding ringfenced for ethnic minority pupils should be redirected.

Special treatment can significantly improve results. I'm not a teacher but ended up, all to often, as an unofficial tutor to many classmates throughout my earlier school years. The attitude projected towards someone trying to learn something cannot be over estimated IMO. It's seemed to me to be almost the paramount consideration.

When the Vietnamese immigrants came to San Diego, the parents put education on the top of the list as well. They too raced past the white majority...at least the first generation. I'm not sure that has held for 2nd generation kids. The work ethic isn't always maintained.

“working families” is a leftist code word for lower middle class families for inciting class hatred. ‘Working class’ implies middle class and above wage earners do not really work for a living and get paid too much for the little work that they do, and should out of fairness, pay much higher taxes to help those who do actually work.

Dollars to ...ummmh, Pounds to doughnuts the immigrant families are intact(mom, pop,siblings, maybe even gramps, grandma) while the poor whities are children of single parent homes where dad is absent and boyfriends of mom are rotated out and in. Also likely mother on public dole and has enough to dign her welfare check.
