Detroit's outlook falls along with home prices (Median Price $7,500 really!)

It may be tough to get financing for a new car these days, but in Detroit you can buy a house with a credit card.

The median price of a home sold in Detroit in December was $7,500, according to Realcomp, a listing service.

Not $75,000. Remove a zero—it's seven thousand five hundred dollars, substantially less than the lowest-price car on the new-car market.

Among the many dispiriting numbers that bleakly depict the decrepitude of this onetime industrial behemoth, the steep slide of housing values helps define the daunting challenge to anyone who wants to lead this shrinking, poverty-pocked city of about 800,000 people.

"We're always fighting ourselves out of a hole," said Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans.

That's because you taxed all the productive people until they left; and subsidized all the non-productive people until that's all you have.

My heart goes out to the people who have nothing to do with that state’s troubles but pay for them anyway. Until Michigan becomes a right to work state, they are screwed, unless some other industry not prone to unionization pops up there.

We can't post the Detroit News or the Free Press here.

Sheriff Evans requested a state of emergency because he had something like 62,000 homes vacant or in foreclosure.

Detroit is a microcosm of how ethnocentric politics combined with dysfunctionality can grind a city ( or any given area of land under this control ) to a halt and turn it into an armpit. I can think of one Windy City Alum that would love to do the same on a grander scale...

Go read this and read how crazy Congressman Conyers Wife truly is. This is stuff you might have seen in Cuba right after the revolution, I would guess.....

The above short article on Detroit’s City Council’s racial antics, regarding an economic proposal on their agenda, will assist FREEPERS in understanding just how bad the situation is in Detroit. If you’ve ever wanted to read just one short article on how this once thriving city of almost two million people has shrunk to an 800,000 (or less) disaster area, read this article.

I grew up on the lower Eastside and we were three things:

Irish Catholic
Democrat
Pro-Union

That was before the riots in 1967.

After that everything changed. Anybody with two nickels to rub together got out, and left the working class hero stuff for the politicos.

My dad who was a Democratic organizing captain is now a Republican State Delegate.

According to the most recent polls, the Democrats are going to get their hinders handed to them in that state in 2010.

Its in Highland Park, not Detroit. Highland Park is worse, if that's possible, and Highland Park is completely surrounded by Detroit.

Detroit’s been run by the Democrats for how many years?

Detroit needs to be liberated by an armed force. I think that’s about the only thing that could save that wretched city.

but they DO have something to do with the states troubles. They keep putting the same incompetent, corrupt hacks into office. And “I voted for the other guy” doesn’t wash. I’m in NY state. It’s also a basket case, but paradise vis-a-vis Detroit. I never vote for the demholes. But i can’t sit here and whine. Eventually, I’ll leave.

Polls can say what they want, but the dems are not going to lose there. They’re WAY too entrenched.

No they would see their liberators as an invading force. Perhaps we should sell it to Windsor, since they nuevo-socialism of soicalized health care and gun control is more intune with Detroits desires anyway....

I’d be happy to be rid of it, but I doubt the Canadians would jump to absorb a city like Detroit.
