AUSTIN, Texas — Democrat Tom Schieffer, a former international diplomat with close ties to former President George W. Bush, is moving toward a race for governor.

Schieffer is forming an exploratory committee that will allow him to raise money and campaign for the office. If he ultimately runs, his relationship to the former Republican president is sure to be a top issue among Democratic primary voters next year.

“If Perry hadn’t pursued that superhighway, threatening to take away everyone’s land in Central Texas, he’d be a lock for reelection.”

Then he would have to deal with that little thing of who his kid is working for.

As much as all hate KBH, I hate Perry more.

Question for Texas FReepers: Will Hutchison pose a serious challenge to Perry in the primary, and will this clown Schieffer (or any TX Dem) be a serious threat in the general.

I would think with the Republican bent of Texas and the fact that it will be a mid-term election, Republicans should have the winds blowing their way.

I can’t imagine Obama or Democrats being popular in Texas right now, or in 2010.

I think if it stays with Perry/Hutchison as the two main contenders in the primary my guess is KBH will defeat Perry. Perry ticked off a lot of his rural supporters with the TTC and then another group with the vaccination of girls. KBH has won state wide as both Treasure or whatever it was called back then and Senator twice.

Perry won in the General last time with less than 40% of the vote. Granted it was a circus with Kinky, Grandma whatever her name is now, and the democrat in the race.

It’s also a tea sip cheerleader versus an aggie yell leader thing. So there is some statewide school competition included come primary time.

10-4 on that. Bob Schieffer’s brother.

Tom might just be the business oriented Democrat “moderate” they want to use to gain power in Texas.

This Schieffer was a partner of W’s in ownership of the Texas Rangers baseball team.

Is this a brother of CBS’s Bob Schieffer, who is originally from Fort Worth?

Yes. He was President Georg W. Bush's Ambassador to Japan.

KBH has less than stellar pro-life credentials though. The child vaccination flap notwithstanding, Perry has solid social conservative credentials. Hutchison is a moderate and Perry is a conservative. It depends on which wing of the GOP is stronger in Texas. My guess is that by 2010, the country (especially Texas) is going to be sour on Obama and liberalism and thus I would like Perry’s chances. However, I don’t live in Texas, so I will defer to those that actually live there.

We have about one year until the Primary. I don’t look at it as the stronger GOP wing but rather which candidate has ticked off the voters in Texas the most. Today I’d say that is Perry as he as governor is the closest to the voters on a day to day basis. True he’s running around trying to out conservative his previous conservative stance. We’ll see as both will have millions to spend and Perry does have a group that can get down and dirty when necessary or so it’s said.

I don’t like Perry but I have to hope he beats KBH who would be worse in my opinion (like Murkowsi in Alaska, Senators don’t have great rack record in being good Governors, Pete Wilson also). I wish a 3rd contender would get in the GOP race.

KBH is ‘popular’ and would win but it’s not out of the question for a rat to beat Perry. The Mayor of Houston I believe is the rat favorite.

Well I’m next door to you but I know Perry is not well liked and I don’t think he’s doing a great job but KHB would be worse.

My feeling is that he’ll win running to the right of her. Hopefully too much damage for the general election won’t be caused.

I wouldn’t recommended it. He’s joined (rejoined) the rat party. Should he decide to run again, he stands zero chance at the rat nomination anyway.

I think that Governor Goodhair should retire and do shampoo commercials. I also think that in Louisiana, David Vitter should leave politics. He could make good money as a spokesman for Depends.
