CNN's Larry King talked with Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal in a prime-time exclusive interview Monday night.
Jindal gave the Republican response after President Obama's address to Congress last week. Jindal received negative reviews after the speech, and Larry asked him how he felt about that. They also talked about the war of words in the Republican Party centered around Rush Limbaugh.
The following transcript has been edited for brevity and clarity:
Larry King: Governor, you took a lot of flak for that speech. Were you surprised that you did?
Gov. Bobby Jindal: Let's be clear, the president is a great speaker -- probably the greatest we've seen in a generation. I'm certainly not nearly as good of a speaker as he is. And I'm not the only one that's got that opinion.
I hope people look at the content of the speech, not just the delivery. You know, for years, I've been told I speak too quickly. Now I'm told I speak too slowly.
What's more important is I was outlining a philosophical difference with the stimulus package, with the leadership in Congress, with the administration. I was outlining a philosophical disagreement that says we need to get businesses hiring again. We need to put more money in the private sector. Watch Larry King's interview with Gov. Bobby Jindal »
Let's cut taxes. Let's get rid of the wasteful spending. That's the debate. That's the discussion we need to be having.
King: But governor, to say that the federal government apparently has no voice in this crisis, when in some cases, they are the only answer, that pointed to a lot of the criticism, didn't it?
Jindal: If the president had actually delivered the targeted temporary stimulus

Sorry Bobby, nobody’s listening. The masses will always take style over substance.
From the transcript, looks like Jindal held his own against Larry King Alive. Every time the Governor gave a solid answer, King immediately switched topics.
Can we PLEASE stop calling Obama a great speaker? HE IS NOT! He makes gaffes all the time, he says, um, ah, um, ah, he lies constantly (that makes him a great propagandist, not a speaker), everything is written for him by other people, whereas Ronald Reagan wrote many of his own speeches. He even had to introduce his HHR secretary with a teleprompter!
Jindal should be himself. A competent, nerdy Indian guy who just does his job is going to look really good in four years.
But if Jindal tries to be hip, he’ll just be an another oaf like Al Gore.
you said it.
now, Jonathan Krohn is a good speaker
“... The masses will always take style over substance.”
Hitler gave great speeches too.
I don't employ my president because he speaks well. I employ him so he'll keep me safe so I can continue to pursue happiness.
I tend to distrust “good speakers” because they can get away with more than the average person and usually do. It’s sort of like really good looking guys...never trusted them all that much either for the same reason - they end up with a character deficit.
“The masses will always take style over substance.”
Unfortunately, true. I thought the content of his speech was excellent. He would easily beat Obama in a debate. But I have already heard talk radio hosts comparing him to nerdy Kenneth from 30 Rock. I would bet SNL is already preparing a skit for Tina Fey and Kenneth to play Palin and Jindal. To people who don’t pay attention to their government or politics, they learn about it from places like SNL. And as long as libs control what impressions they want to give people about conservatives, it won’t matter who runs against Obama.
OK, I’ll say he has a good “voice”, but he’s almost incompetent from the brain to the mouth.
I agree - Obama is NOT a great speaker. He uses teleprompters and when he doesn’t his speech is full of hesitations, pauses and filler (ah, umm, ahh).
That said, Jindal did well with Larry King, not letting Larry sidetrack him from the main issues of overspending. It was a good idea to go on LKL (although the man makes me puke) to address the issues with his previous speech and show people that he CAN and DOES manage to speak well and has a great grasp of the issues.
Seems to me that Moses wasn’t a very good speaker either.
Oh geeze Jindal, don’t you know politics is a great big stage, and no one really cares what you say, but how you say it. Obviously, How else can you explain Obama being elected. But I never really thought Obama’s delivery was that great, more hype than greatness.
Sarah Palin is a great speaker.
I had a liberal tell me the other day that he sees B.O.’s constant uh, uh, uh as a sign that he is actually thinking about his responses rather than just spouting party lines.
Sometimes you just can’t win. At least when arguing with a liberal.
Attention Bobby Jindal: GET A CLUE! OBAMA is NOT even close to being a "great" speaker. He can read an Obamaprompter! He no longer appears in public without one because of his fumbling and stumbling of ah, uh, and duhs! Watch Obama as he speaks with his Obamaprompter please. He is petrified to each of the two screens, he is robotic and speaks like he is in a trance.
Jindal was chosen to give the response for the same reason that Steele was chosen to head RNC, sending the message to Dems: Look, we wanna be just like you!!!
Doesn’t work.
