CU students erect 'Free Speech Cage' to support Ward Churchill

Enclosed in a 3-foot-by-3-foot chain-link cage, members of a University of Colorado student group made their case Tuesday that former professor Ward Churchill wasn’t fired for plagiarism, but, rather, for saying the wrong things about 9/11.

CU officials reiterated Tuesday that Churchill was fired solely for academic misconduct.

The event was staged to promote Thursday night’s pro-Churchill rally at the Glenn Miller Ballroom, which will take place four days before the ex-professor’s lawsuit against CU goes to trial in Denver.

CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard said the students’ rally did not provide an accurate portrayal of the university’s reasons for firing Churchill in 2007.

“It’s not free speech that’s in a cage — it’s plagiarism and academic misconduct,” Hilliard said, emphasizing that Churchill was fired only after an investigation by 25 tenured faculty members found instances of “willful and repeated academic misconduct” in Churchill’s work.

“CU officially ruled that Churchill’s 9/11 essay and comments are protected by the First Amendment,” Hilliard said. “There has never been an attempt to stifle Ward Churchill’s free speech — the issue has always been academic misconduct.”

The student group’s members also handed out fliers for Thursday night’s “Forbidden Education and the Rise of Neo-MacCarthyism” event, at which controversial Weather Underground co-founder Bill Ayers will speak alongside Churchill.

If he had to stand on his real achievements or contributions he would be nothing and I most certainly would not be typing about his miserable being. When you look at it this way it is not surprising that he would do what he does. To do otherwise would mean he would starve and assume his well deserved and warranted invisibility for Pete's Sake!

As to the first part, not a reason in the world that I could see. I can't find a single reason that you shouldn't in a principled way —there may be some practical considerations, such as do you know how (laughter from audience)

And the simple answer, although it probably should be more complicated, but I'm not being flip and giving the simple answer, is:
