Team Obama's Petty Limbaugh Strategy
Time.com "Swampland" ^ | 3/04/09 | Michael Scherer

President Obama won the presidency by promising to be a different, more substantive, less gimmicky leader. He said he would not waste our time on "phony outrage," like fulminations on the meaning of "lipstick on a pig," or silly characters like "Joe The Plumber," a guy who was actually named Samuel and was not even a licensed plumber. No, Obama said he was going to solve problems instead. Now that he is in the White House, he still makes this case, almost every day. On Wednesday morning, during an address about contracting reforms, he referred dismissively to the "chatter on the cable stations."

But what is the chatter on the cable stations? For most of this week, and for much of the last month, it has been about Rush Limbaugh. Hour after hour, daytime pundits are asked a litany of banal Rush questions: Does Rush really run the Republican Party? Why did RNC chair Michael Steele apologize to Rush? What does it mean that Rush addressed conservatives last weekend? As Jonathan Martin makes clear in the Politico today, this entire controversy has been cooked up and force fed to the American people by Obama's advisers.* In other words, it's not the kind of change you can believe in.

Americans should heartily applaud Rush Limbaugh's willingness to offer the dignity of his office and position behind the golden EIB microphone to debate the President. Mr. Obama's administration certainly could use a lift in stature at this point.

And Rush Limbaugh's offer to debate demonstrates a commitment to our country even at the risk of sacrificing status from Rush's own significant contributions. This is yet another example of how a patriot like Rush is willing to do what is best for our nation. I hope the President both takes him up on the offer and also learns from Rush's example.

I love how the writer takes the opportunity not to just name the man but to bash him while mentioning that this kind of smear is what Obama was supposedly AGAINST. And note he doesn't mention JTP's tax issue, which seems to have disappeared since not paying taxes is now a requirement of joining his cabinet.

All Rush has to do is put out the word and everything will happen and it will happen suddenly. I’m waiting....

These people just don’t get it. We won’t stop listening to Rush just because they say so. Not going to happen. They might as well get used to it.

Rush’s offer will be rebuffed with, “The White House knows that Rush’s offer is not genuine.” or a derivative thereof.

No mention of JTP’s records being illegally accessed by Obama’s fellow travelers.

Obama is not scared of psychopaths attacking the united states, instead he is directing all his energies at concealing his pork socialism plans by attacking Rush. He does not use truth he uses misdirection because he knows the truth is indefensable.

I have come to the conclusion that, because people are absolutely stupid, the distraction that the 0bama administration is highlighting (Rush Limbaugh), the 0bama move to socialism and communism will be quite easy.

Rahm has learned the 'watch my left hand' trick quite well!!!!!

You mean Time actually gets it on this one? I’m stunned. I note that the execrable Newsweek published an article attacking Rush.

silly characters like "Joe The Plumber,"...

Better to be known as "Joe The Plumber" than being known as "Joe the Dumber" as Biden is known as.

hussein pi$$ed himself when Rush offered this magnificent challenge... hussein has no intention of having his present gig terminated by being uncovered for who and what he truly is... brought down in glorious truth by the one and only MAHA RUSHIE!

Repubs should really take a page from the Dems playbook, and repeat everywhere and anywhere they can one certain buzzword, "Nixonian".

"How Nixonian of Obama to go after someone in the media", "This is simply Nixon redux", "Can't the Obama administration come up with something other than an old Nixon tactic to go after their enemies".

Get enough people saying it, especially those that get on the talk shows, the media will have to report it. Heck, get Rush himself to say it! But it has to be a coordinated effort, just like the Dems would do with their focus-groups, etc. - select a buzzword and go out there and repeat it until it's everywhere.

Maybe the media will even be so stupid as to report it as "Repubs accuse White House of using Nixon-style tactics on so-called 'enemies'". Some will then ask what that means, and all you need is one word, "Watergate".

"As Jonathan Martin makes clear in the Politico today, this entire controversy has been cooked up and force fed to the American people by Obama's advisers.*"

The "get Rush" panic has jumped the shark. This is rehashed Carville-Begala strategy from the 1990s. They are wasting time trying to distract people with this misdirection decoy operation in mass hysteria.

They are playing Alinskyite mind control games in mass hysteria and Hegelian dialectic while the country faces its most serious economic crisis since 1929. It's juvenile and adolescent lowball politics. Not something you would expect from presidential leadership during a serious national crisis.

With his old Clinton Administration colleagues, Paul Begala and James Carville, Greenberg realized that Limbaugh was deeply unpopular among wide swaths of the American electorate. So, the strategists figured, why not turn the turn Republican Party into a Limbaughesque caricature?

 Humungous

                                                            "What a puny plan!"

It was just flat out boneheaded on the part of the WH to let itself get into a pissing contest, which is what this is. Even Bill Clinton would tread lightly around Rush, and he certainly didn't allow it to become center stage.

I can't think of a time when a President ever got involved in such a thing. Good grief, Rush can keep this contest going for four years, while a President cannot.

I don't see any way out of this for Obama, without looking like Rush got the best of him.

What’s amazing is the comment section. These guys are unbelievable. The idea that a Time reporter wouldn’t be actually kissing Obama’s backside has them in a royal snit! As usual, liberals don’t address the issue that Scherer points out....that this whole conversation about Rush resulted from a poll and moved by the White House and continued by the Drive by Butt boys. Instead, they call Rush names and talk about how horrible Republicans are for “obstructing” things....ah...guess what guys. They don’t NEED the Republican votes so why are they upset????

Let the Republicans stand on principle and when the stock market crashes and burns (even more) and the promises aren’t kept, the Dems own it.
