Former state Senate leader Don Perata and his attorney have mounted a furious campaign against a decision by Sacramento federal prosecutors to review corruption allegations that San Francisco federal prosecutors declined to pursue.
The Sacramento review violates a deal, called a tolling agreement, between defense attorneys and the U. S. attorney's office in San Francisco that stopped the clock on the statute of limitations while the parties discussed the matter, the defense attorneys insist.
That agreement does not extend to the Sacramento U. S. attorney's office and the statute of limitations now precludes prosecution, the attorneys claim.

SAN FRANCISCO — Former California Senate leader Don Perata’s lawyer says federal prosecutors in San Francisco have dropped their 4 1/2-year political corruption investigation against him, but federal attorneys in Sacramento are now pursuing the case.
Perata attorney George L. O’Connell says he was told by Sacramento prosecutors in early January that they were resurrecting the case. But, he says, they gave him no explanation for the move.

Acting United States Attorney
Lawrence G. Brown
Since March 2003, Mr. Brown has served as the First Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California. In that position, he serves as the second-ranking official under United States Attorney McGregor Scott. Headquartered in Sacramento, the Eastern District is one of four federal districts in California, extending from the Oregon border to the north, Bakersfield to the south and covering Californias central valley and the mountains to the east.
San Francisco fell under the Northern District.
U.S. Attorney: Joseph Russoniello (I think)

Don Perata, isn’t he the guy that has introduced many anti-gun bills?
Thanks... I thought I might have known him but for once I was wrong
Yup,, he proposed taxes on diapers and bullets. He’s a pantload.
It's humbling, isn't it? ;-)
Yes. AKA Don the Gun. He is supposed to have or at least did have a CCW for a 92F. Apparently all the “gun nuts” in Cali are dangerous. He got his state leased car carjacked in Oakland

Once it's out there, I'm sure Obama will fire him, while simultaneously supporting the Congressional investigation into the "illegal firing" of US Attorneys by Bush (Rove and Miers will be testifying on this soon).

Hooboy! LOL!!!
"...money raised to help Oakland schoolchildren likely was spent on crab, wine, and football for a bunch of rich people.
"...Over the past ten years, Perata has spent more than $1 million of campaign cash on parties and high-end lifestyle expenditures...

Coincidence or Corruption? - Documents raise new questions about the conduct of Senator Don Perata.
"...the FBI, the US Attorney's Office, and a grand jury are examining whether he operated a complicated money-laundering scheme involving his close friend and business associate, Timothy Staples.
"...Over the years, Staples was hired sometimes at Perata's urging by several companies that had business in Sacramento, the Bay Area, and around the state. The senator then would do something to benefit those companies. Staples, in turn, would pay Perata as a "consultant."
It couldn’t happen to a better thug.
