As a 30-year resident of Chicago's beautiful North Side lakefront, I take some personal pride in my neighbor Mike Quigley's big win Tuesday in the cattle-call race for Congress in the 5th District.
Mr. Quigley still has to get by GOP and Green Party foes in the April general election. But that's likely, and as a member of the House, his mix of liberal social views and a zeal for political reform is in the best lakefront political tradition.
But the irony is, while representing lakefront views, Mr. Quigley got virtually no election-day help from those who take the 135, 145 and 146 buses to work.
Mr. Quigley won his race on the Northwest Side, home of the Machine and all those folks whose names end in 'ski and 'ini. On the lakefront itself, it was time to to pump up at the gym, get that manicure or walk the dog. ANYTHING but voting.
Wake me when Barack Obama's name is on the ballot.
For most of the past 30 or 40 years, the lakefront played a unique role in Chicago's political life.

Over at the Chicago Blogger Pat Hickey site, he writes: "Mike Quigley! No time to sit back there big fella - let's get you packed on on your way!
God is Great! No one and I mean no one saw this Anus Mirabile! God in His Majesty has cooked the ballots in the 5th Congressional District and has deigned to send The Uriah Heep of Illinois -Commissioner Mike Quigley* - to Congress. Washington D.C. gets the Terror of Tiny Town! 22% of the Vote! And Bob Sherman does not believe in God! Well, Bob, my boy take another look! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWEH!
I can not tell you how happy this makes me. Mike, if you need a hand packing and clear wrapping the boxes let me know. I'll pick up ten Boxes of Joe from Karim at Double Ds ( Dunkin Donuts) on Western. I have about six good and thick blue U-Haul blankets up in the rafters of my garage from when me and the kids moved to Morgan Park.
Sure, I know you got the 'real' election in April and all, but, really, let's start looking for a nice Hobbit Habitat(My note: maybe share the same basement-against zoning-rental as Emanuel?) for you in D.C. and get your stuff packed up and shipped.
"Quigley would take the ring-pop out of the mouth of a pre-schooler and blame someone in the 19th Ward."...Hickey adds.
The republican nominee is Rosanna Puldio, the founder and director of the Illinois Minuteman Project, and I’m her volunteer coordinator. She’s pro-life and pro-gun rights.
Please read her site, www.rosannapulido2009.com. If you know anyone who wants to volunteer for her, please ask them to email me at philacollins@yahoo.com. If you know anyone who wants to donate, to her campaign, please ask them do do so, through her site.
LOL liberal snobs.
