Tuscaloosa, AL (AHN) - Officials from the University of Alabama admitted Thursday that student athletes received free textbooks for other students.

Allegations started during the 2007 football season, when five players were suspended for violating NCAA rules.

The rules say a student athlete cannot spend more than $100 dollars as gifts for girlfriends, boyfriends or other students.

I know that it is strange for Bama football players to know what a textbook is, much less possess one. But if this is a trend, why stop it? C'mon. A college student needs a textbook.

Disclaimer: I do know that what they are alleged to have done is not according to rules. It is just that this Auburn person cannot help but capitalize on it.

Isn’t this the school Nick Saban ran to when he couldn’t cut the NFL world? I’m sure the Miami Dolphins front office is having a chuckle right now...

Shocker. A Nick Saban program doing something illegal. May he get what he truly deserves.

You’re right. That’s why I put it in general and chat instead of breaking news.

I lost all respect for Alabama ever since Forrest Gump graduated.

I grew up in Auburn.

I know, I shouldn’t be laughing at an opponent’s misfortune.

Okahoma was already placed on probation for the Big Red Imports issue and is done.

Florida State was just handed a similar penalty for a violation and I’m sure Alabama will get somethign similar although they’ve been on probation recently and the NCAA may make their penalty harsher.

some of these things are kind of petty. why does the school get in trouble when it is the student athlete who breaks the rules. these athletes should be paid for how much they bring to the schools. It is almost like slave labor for the schools.

You’re right. As far as infractions go, this is extremely minor. But it is theft. The students who got the textbooks basically stole them from the scholarship provider and they were aided in the theft by the athlete. The University shouldn’t be penalized, imo. The punishment for the theft is up to the powers that be.
