KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Animal welfare advocates said they're seeing more dogs and cats that have been abandoned in foreclosed homes.
"It's not the first time I've seen it. I've had other homes that were about to be foreclosed on, and people have just left their pets behind," real estate agent Sabrena Morgan told KMBC's Maria Antonia.
Morgan rescued Chica the dog, who was dumped behind a fence when the owner facing foreclosure left the Kansas City home.
"And he walked around, tossed it over the 6-foot privacy fence. Nobody would've known it was back there. They left, I came back gave it food and water," Morgan said.
Morgan found a new owner for Chica.
"You can't just leave them to die, and that's what happened to Chica," said Julie Goldberg, who adopted Chica. "Oh my gosh, it just breaks my heart every time I hear about animals that are left behind."
Another real estate agent found two dogs in a back yard without any water or food. The owners had moved to Nebraska.
Care to guess what nationality might name their dog “Chica”?
I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that deadbeats who walk out on their financial obligations are also turning their backs on their obligations to their pets. What dirtballs..
It’s only going to get worse, sadly. Society is taking an express elevator to hell, going down.
I rescue cats. Have a bunch of them here now. Times are tough and their food has gone up 40% in less than a year. The kitty litter has skyrocketed. So, we eat more pasta and buy less clothes. We get less haircuts and do less other stuff.
Pets are family, we could do nothing else.
I could not imagine walking away.
If these people will kill a baby, what is an animal to them?
There’s no excuse for people doing this. There are plenty of shelters in big cities, and I’m sure even small towns have at least one. There’s also internet sites for pet adoptions. There’s just no excuse for leaving/dumping an animal.
This is the early stage. Soon they will be roasted and eaten over communal fires.
criminy ... thanks for the mental image with your nickname.
I'm not excusing people who just abandon their animals, but we're also hearing and reading a lot about how many animals in the shelters or pounds which are put down each year... and that the numbers of animals abandoned at shelters and pounds is up, too, with the mortgage situation being what it is.
It's a shame, but there are people who seemingly think they have to choose between humans and animals. Some people have to move in with other people, and for whatever reason they can't bring their furbabies with them.
In an ideal world, no animal would be homeless, but obviously this is far from an ideal world, and it's probably gonna get worse. A lot of people are tightening their belts, and there are probably a number of folks who would adopt some of these unfortunate animals, but who just can't stretch their pet food dollars any further.
The really heartbreaking ones are the animals who are not easily adoptable. Old critters, pets with some sort of medical condition, etc. If someone has to move in a hurry and can't take their animals...
Yup it is true. I have 2 doberman pups on my porch that was either dumped or left for dead. I at first had three but found one a home. They are pissing me off too. They tore a hole in my screen to my sliding door and keep chewing up newspaper in the yard. grrrrr
I know you aren’t excusing it—just stating a reality that I’m aware of as well. I would rather have an animal put down in a humane way than to starve to death in someone’s home or yard or neighborhood. They could also take the animal to a vet to be put down. These people are just too damn lazy and heartless to do the right thing. These are the types of people that you see on Animal Cops who never treated the dog/cat right in the first place.
No way!
I'll have to go ask my 95yo grandmother for recipes!!
I would pay $$$$ to who would tell me who dumped these pups on my street. So I could return the favor. :)
BTW, it isn't as easy to find a vet who will just put down an animal at your discretion. I have an older cat who is sweet with people, but she hates other cats (and I have two other cats). She has been a major problem with urinating to mark territory.
She's now 11 years old and has one cauliflower ear. She's kind of cranky. She's probably not very adoptable--I tried posting ads on a couple of online places, and got no takers. I adopted her myself from rescue four years ago.
I was so fed up at one point with the marking that I started calling around to see how much it would cost to have her put down, including calling the local pound. The pound won't euthanize unless the animal is ill.
A couple of years ago someone shot a cat and threw it over the brick wall here, paralyzing his hind legs. I heard him crying as he tried to pull himself around the yard on his front legs. I gave him some pain medicine which was left over from when one of my cats got spayed.
Animal Control didn't make it here for several hours after I called, so I ended up instead taking the poor beast to the pound, where they stuffed him into a small cage.
Eventually, that evening, a vet saw him and finally euthanized him. But the poor guy suffered all afternoon and part of the evening in that condition before he was put down.
Regarding my problem-peeing cat: I also checked with some of the local vets to see just how much it would cost to euthanize her; some of them wanted the proverbial "arm and a leg"--as much as a couple of hundred dollars to euthanize. This might be partly to discourage people who euthanize on a whim.
That sounds absolutely awful, both stories. I hate to sound callous or unkind, but 2 or 3 .22Lr to the brain pan ends suffering quickly (proper backstop and cleanup neccessary of coarse). I hate to see our little friends suffer.
Unfortunately this is the sort of thing one sees on the Animal Planet “reality” shows that follow SPCA officers all over, in many different cities. It’s heartbreaking to see the way some of these scumbags will treat their pets, or animals in general.
In every episode there’s at least one scene of an abandoned place with pets left in them.

I named my dog 'Rosa'. ;-)
