A police officer has died following a shooting incident in Craigavon, County Armagh.
The incident is understood to have happened near Lismore Manor in the Brownlow area as police investigated reports of suspicious activity.
The attack follows the weekend murder of two soldiers outside an Army base in Antrim. The Real IRA said they were responsible for that shooting.
Politicians have condemned the latest killing of a security force member.
DUP assembly member David Simpson described the attack as an "outrage" and said those behind it were "vermin".
"What we have seen over the last 36 hours is a deliberate and sustained effort by terrorist murderers to try to drag Northern Ireland back to the worst days of Ulster's past," he said.

County Armagh. ‘Tis terrorism.
In honor of the swimmer?
Armagh was one of my favorite places in the North. Visited a couple of years ago.
RIP.
Ohhhhh, dear. This doesn’t sound good.
Not all terrorists have turbans. Some have red hair and freckles.
The IRA has figured out that Europe and the US are going soft on terrorists, so they started up again. Terrorists are connected. Libya has helped the IRA.

Heeeeeyyyyyyyyy! Watch it! ;)
“The IRA has figured out that Europe and the US are going soft on terrorists, so they started up again. Terrorists are connected. Libya has helped the IRA.”
It isn’t the Provisional IRA of Gerry Adams fame, it is a splinter group called the Real IRA.
The Provisional IRA lost and realised that bombs and terror couldn’t win. The Real IRA still have the fantasy that it can.
This is not the beginning of a new “troubles” but the end of it. No-one wants it any more and all sides have condemned it. Even the local Catholic Church went outside after mass on Sunday to have a service where the Bitish Soldiers were murdered.
In effect this is the final fling of the lunatics, now that they have no asylum.
Ireland ping!
Welcome to FR.
Stand by for the sympathizers who will soon make their way to this thread.
Interesting - just read that he C-IRA has claimed this one.
BS? Just the RIRA causing confusion?
Or, does the CIRA want to join in on the fun and remain relevant?
Thanks for the ping.
Briton: Welcome.
My son-of-an-Irish-Born-Catholic father hated the IRA in the 1940s (when they bombed the UK pavilion at the NYC World’s Fair) as did all my relatives. Don’t judge Americans of Irish descent by the likes of Kennedy or other loud mouths. Most of us are Americans first last and only and real Americans know who our friends are.
There are two ideas on this one.
The first is that the C-IRA planned this along with the R-IRA and they are working close on this and trying to show that this is bigger than one group. (Although they both have very little support even amongst Republicans.)
The second is that they want to get in on the act to prove they are as “relevant” as the R-IRA.
In any case the community of dissidents is so small - there is an estimate of around 60 willing to kill - that they will all know each other and are essentially the same ideology.
Thanks for the welcome.
Now that you mention it, weren’t they suspected of working together to get weapons out of the Balkans following all wars there?
TBH, it’s been quite awhile since I’ve kept up with either organization because it seemed they’d been rather marginalized. I know both groups have attempted attacks in the past decade or so, but they’ve all seemed rather sloppy (luckily). That would be a good reason for them to start collaborating on attacks.
Plus, if you combine all the weapons the RIRA got from the Provos after decommisioning with the weapons and the people of the CIRA, you’d have a more lethal operation.
Ugh, it just breaks my heart that this is happening again. I really hope they nip it in the bud quickly.
Ironically, I suggested Fifty Dead Men Walking for my bookclub this time, b/c the movie is going to be released in the US this year. I’m supposed to talk about how much things have changed in the Province since that book takes place.
