Second Loud Boom Rattles Windows In NY

May Have Been Meteorite (3/9/2009) There's been another loud "boom." This time it rattled windows in parts of Rockland County.

Nanuet resident Keith Wallenstein said the mysterious noise woke him up at about 5:15 Monday morning and sounded like someone had flown an F-16 over his house.

An earlier loud "boom" heard in Westchester County early Saturday might have been a meteorite.

Police and The Journal News got a flurry of reports from people in Scarsdale, Mount Vernon, Yonkers, Tuckahoe, Eastchester and Bronxville.

Weather officials say there was no thunder in the area at the time.

Liz Holland of Mount Kisco says she was looking out her window around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. She saw a brilliant yellow object streaking through the sky.

An official from the Rockland Astronomy Club says yellow is a typical color for a meteorite.

Meanwhile, the curator of the private Macovich Collection made an offer on Tuesday, asking residents of the New York suburb for chunks of the barely cooled meteorite. Darryl Pitt is offering $10,000 for it.

Pitt is intrigued by the reports of a big "boom" and the brilliant yellow streak in the skies north of New York City.

Pitt says has spoken with Liz Holland, who witnessed the spectacle early Saturday. He is convinced that she did, indeed, see a meteorite fireball.

Pitt is offering $10,000 for the first person who turns over a kilogram of suburban space rock.

LAST WEEK The same BOOMS were heard in Santa Cruz and Oarnge County California...hmmm

One may be a meteor. Two would not be.

LAST WEEK..
Mystery sonic boom in California

Residents of California’s Central Coast experienced a sonic boom Wednesday morning but nobody knows the source. The Federal Aviation Administration reviewed their data and came back empty-handed.

Military flying supersonic, I bet.

We get that off the coast, with excuses like “atmospheric conditions amplified the sounds of military bombing excercizes on San Clemente Island”, that explains the boom that was heard from San Diego to Point Dumas.

One may be a meteorite, but three or four?

It’s the sound of Obama’s lofty rhetoric and bitter reality colliding....

"Pitt is offering $10,000 for the first person who turns over a kilogram of suburban space rock."

The last meteor I saw streak across the sky "landed"(disintegrated in the sky) some 2,000 miles away. Good luck to all those NY'ers hunting around the burbs trying to find something that isn't there. If any bits did make it to earth, they'd be in Ohio somewhere.

‘Atmospheric Condition’ Likely Cause Of Rumbles, Say Experts
Blasting, Vibration Sounds Rattle Residents

SALLISAW, Okla. — The Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office has been flooded with more than 100 calls since Tuesday. On Friday residents in Crawford and Sebastian counties in Arkansas and Adair and LeFlore counties in Oklahoma reported feeling and hearing rumbles.

“(The noise) is always from a distance,” said Chris Keathley, of the Sequoyah County Department of Emergency Management. “We’ve never had anybody say it’s right here on me.”

Ron Lockhart, the Sequoyah County sheriff, said the department has checked with every mining company in the county but none have reported any blasting.

More on this..

In Bude (Cornwall, England) today there was the sound of a huge explosion that caused huge cracks in at least one person’s house. The thing is no one knows what caused it — there is no obvious explosion site, and the MOD and RAF deny any supersonic planes were flying over that area. Although the Ministry of Defence have been known to lie sometimes, surely a sonic boom that could crack houses would have smashed everyone’s windows too. It’s a fascinating mystery.

This has happened in the US as well. In April, I experienced it in San Diego and it was reported in the newspaper. Every agency or entity that could conceivably be responsible says it had nothing to do with it and though it shook my four story office building, there is still no explanation for it.

"why not two? might have come from the same place and broke up while... passing the moon?'

Sure why not. Hasn't everyone seen those 'end of the earth' Glo-bull warming movies where moon-meteors are falling by the dozens in slow motion with trails of smoke behind them- smashing into buildings?

Of course the Eviro-greeny scientist goes up in the first warp engine driven space shuttle, detonates a "meg" bomb (which he builds out of parts scavenged from the shuttle) and heals the fractured moon, which then goes back into it's proper orbit, saving the world.

All hail the enviro-geek scientists is the moral of the story, and of course it could all be avoided if evil man didn't burn "fossil fuel".

Well, if it was a sonic boom from aircraft, don’t they produce a double-boom? I mean, that’s what I’ve actually heard myself. It’s a distinctive sound.

Otherwise, if not a sonic boom from aircraft, then perhaps someone blowing up an outhouse, as a joke... LOL...

Oh..., wait a minute..., we don’t have outhouses, any more...

One time I was driving around Talihina, OK, actually by Sardis Lake and headed over to the Talimena Highway for a road trip, and while at Sardis Lake, on an island there, I heard some loud booms, in a regular repeating pattern, for an hour or so. They were loud and continuous, in intervals of maybe a minute or so. The boomed through the hills around there.

But, considering the direction they were coming from, and the fact that I knew over in that direction was McAlester Ammunition Depot (and the fact that these “explosions” were regular), I concluded they were disposing of ordinance or something similar. The McAlester Ammunition Depot was about 30-35 miles away and over many hills and “mountains” (if you can call them that in Oklahoma... LOL... ).

You never know what you hear and for what reason, when you don’t know all the details or some facts are missing from your “knowledge”. If I had not known what was around there, I might have really wondered about that...

Likely debris from the recent satellite collision. It's coming down all over the place.
