Democrats Block GOP Bid to Extend DC Vouchers

Senate Democrats have dealt a setback to a Republican-sponsored school voucher program that gives schoolchildren in the nation's capital the chance to attend private schools.

The Senate voted 50-39 along mostly party lines to reject a bid by Nevada Republican Sen. John Ensign to extend the program beyond the 2009-2010 school year. That leaves in place a provision contained in a huge spending bill that requires Congress and the Washington, D.C. government to re-approve the program. Republicans say that is likely to kill it.

About 1,700 mostly low-income and minority students kids receive the $7,500 vouchers, which offer an alternative to the troubled D.C. school system.

Why, when 90% of those in the program are black, is this not trumpeted as racist? Why, when the costs are double per student in DC public schools, is this not exposed as wasteful? Why, with Democrats in charge of the world, do I even bother?

If the RNC had any vision or cohesion, they would be putting spots out on this - exposing the evil Dims for what they are. Instead, they just roll over and play dead. If they’re not going to fight for their convictions, what good is it to have any?

Gotta love it, when the RATS dictatorial education dogma skewers their own. But the public school teacher's jobs are safe whether or not they bother to teach. Better to have an unthinking, uneducated populace.

Just channeling the logical think of the RATS. Nobody with an intact brain would ever vote for a RAT.

Why do minorities tow the Democrats line when it destroys their lives?

There are two poor kids that attend the same school as B-HO’s kids on those vouchers. They will now get kicked out for lack of funding!

[Why do minorities tow the Democrats line when it destroys their lives? ]

Because they are ignorant. The Democrats like it that way which is why they can’t have them attending good schools.

Obama doesn’t want those poor, black kids anywhere near his daughters.

They voted to be #1 again. The worst school district in the US.

This is all about teachers unions. Can't say you voted against them.

Dear DC Democrats:

Next time you vote, remember who tried to keep your kids away from THEIR kids.....

Zero doesn't want his girls punished by having to go to Sidwell Friends with "Those People."

I'll be fair... I'm sure all of the other elitist parents of DC's private schools are joyous that the gates to their little world are once again shut and locked.

Heaven forbid that their little princes and princesses had to be around children that have to deal with the harsh world outside.

These vouchers allow two girls to attend school with the Obama daughters in their private school. Must be huge vouchers...

I am guessing they will get waivers.

I’m glad to see this happen ‘cuz I am strongly opposed to the federal government being involved in education. Stop the vouchers, close the Dept. of Education, & give education back to the states, families, & churches. This is only a tiny step in what should be a long journey.

I know that the Dims would like for the government to take over education completely, & that is the reason why they oppose vouchers for private schools.

D’Rats are nothing more than slaves to the unions and the abortion industry. They would rather pass damaging and deadly societal legislation than put their job on the line by angering their constituencies.

They could really spin this hard against the Dems, too.

Stating the race of those most affected, and outright calling the policy RACIST.

Right back at ‘em.

And also because Republicans won’t stand outside a DC school with a reporter or two in tow and rant and rave about the RATS being racists. Just wait, though, until the unconstitutional give DC a vote bill heats up. You know the RATS will be doing that on the hour to any Republicans who oppose it.

Didn’t Obama make a general statement on education in which he seemed to support the concept of vouchers? Guess he decided to allow Congress to lead on this too?
