MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Pleads 'Guilty' to Barney Frank for Media Scrutiny of Obama Appointees
NewsBusters ^ | March 11, 2009 | Jeff Poor

The Treasury Department oversees the Internal Revenue Service. But if the Secretary of the Treasury - or any other political appointee being considered for the Treasury Department - didn't pay his income payroll taxes, it doesn't matter. That's the message from House Banking Committee Chairman Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and he blamed the fourth estate for acting like it does matter.

On MSNBC's March 11 broadcast of "Andrea Mitchell Reports," host Andrea Mitchell asked Frank to respond to criticism in a March 11 piece from New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman that too many appointees were being held up for what he deemed insignificant reasons.

"I think it's a problem, although I will say this - for the media to blame that entirely on the Senate seems to me a little bit self serving," Frank said. "I mean, the media is the problem here, in part. It is the over-focus on part of people in the media to relatively minor infractions that causes this. I guarantee you my colleagues would not on their own be doing this. So I do think we are in a culture now where a lack of perfection exacts too strong a toll, but that's the politicians reacting to the media."

Barney Frank is clueless. Several years ago I had my bank trust department sell off some of my stocks, and I underestimated my annual earnings which was increased by the capital gains on the stock sale. So, my quarterly tax estimates were too small. So, after January 1st of the next year I rec’d a letter from the IRS stating that I had underpaid my taxes that year, so I had to pay the remainder of the taxes, AND THAT I WOULD BE FINED FOR UNDERPAYING MY TAXES. I had to pay an additional fee as a punishment for not preplanning exactly how much capital gains I was going to be making that tax year!

Yet, the clowns out in Washington, DC seem to think anything they do is peanuts, and we peons (who are not Ivy Leagers) ought not to be so picayune when criticizing them for tax dodging. Their hypocricy has no boundaries.

Andrea Mitchell is a Washington hack who parrots the prevailing beltway/Democrat opinion on EVERYTHING. There isn’t an ounce of critical thinking. It’s all Washingtonian herd mentality with her. She was a vocal defender of Caroline Schlossberg too.

Chicagoan, Al Capone could be the dOpey-One’s head of BATFE if he weren’t dead. He only had a tax problem.

I don’t understand the lack of outrage

Why do you expect the people to be outraged? Half of them don't pay taxes themselves, so they couldn't care less if Geithner pays his. The other half are getting their "news" from the MSM, so how would they know about all this? Remember that the percentage of people who listen to Rush or Sean or Savage is probably only about 10% at most. If the average taxpayer knew what we know, it would be pitchfork time.

Pardon me while I don’t pay my $4240 tax bill for 2008. Lack of perfection that I am and all.

NOW I KNOW HOW THE FRENCH FELT ABOUT MARIE ANTIONETTE!!!

Even if she didn’t say “let them eat cake”, it is the SAME ATMOSPHERE of pampered royalty and it is in our face.

The “poor” don’t feel it because they are thrown crumbs and are content for them without working.

I cannot describe my frustration and I am seriously seriously thinking I do not need to belong to the RNC because they obviously are not making a difference by passing $400 bajillion gazillion bills that do NOTHING for me and my family.

This arrogant vile corrupt destroyer of our wealth, freedom and happiness - Rep Frank - gets away with it because the stupid and depraved voters in his district dont have the cohones to toss him out of office.

This man got parking tickets fixed for his gay live-in lover, so of course he will think nothing of tax evasion. Small potatoes.
