WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says he has not decided whether to restore the Federal Emergency Management Agency to a stand-alone department but promises that his administration is committed to robust Gulf Coast recovery efforts regardless of the agency's status.
"We're going to be focused on New Orleans' reconstruction, and we're going to be paying a lot of attention to the systems that are in place to protect from hurricanes in the future," Obama said during a White House interview Wednesday with The Times-Picayune and other regional newspapers.
In the far-ranging interview, Obama made a case for continuing Justice Department review of Southern elections, particularly the drawing of districts under the Voting Rights Act. He also said there has been a "sense of drift" at NASA and that he will appoint a new director soon whose mission will be to return a "sense of excitement and interest" to the nation's space program.
On hurricane recovery, Obama said he is not ready to say when he will visit New Orleans. He said he is "still just trying to figure out my schedule tomorrow."
And while he said he has not decided whether FEMA should be an independent agency, as it was during the Clinton administration, or remain part of the Department of Homeland Security, he said his nominee to run FEMA, Craig Fugate, should provide people with confidence.
"When you got Haley Barbour (Mississippi's Republican governor), Jeb Bush (Florida's former GOP governor) and Democrats in Congress agreeing on somebody, they know what they're doing," he said.

On the Voting Rights Act, Obama said he knows that, by and large, communities are no longer imposing a poll tax or having county clerks turn away African-American voters. But he said there is still a

Bambi thinks that somewhere in the South there are still poll taxes and there are still evil white county clerks turning away blacks.
The article also touches on NASA, the voting rights act,the economy,GITMO,the budget and Mexico.I know it's a short insight into Bambi but it shows how he thinks.
He's worried that an at-large system of electing city council or county board members might result in black and Hispanic candidates not being elected. So what are we going to have? Set asides for minorities only? Marion Barry got elected to an at large seat, after his jail time and second stint as Mayor. In New Orleans you won't be elected to any at large seat if you are not black.
This is a guy who was elected in a predominantly white country and he's worried about white racism. Try running as a non-black in a black majority area and see how you do.
pay grade issue
Ray Nagin says Obama can win early in the south by concentrating on NO now.
“Try running as a non-black in a black majority area and see how you do.”
I don’t think that a white candidate would have a chance against a black candidate in an area that had a sizable black majority. Yet the news industry would never see racism, no matter how different the qualifications of the two candidates.
Considering Illinois’ experience with the Big Dig, I expect to see New Orleans slide off into the Gulf of Mexico any time now.
This idiot is in so far over his head.
Oh Great ONE, please divulge the name(s) and location(s) of the remaining persecutors of our brethren so that we may smite them.
Is this guy series? I mean, this is hugh. Paging Rev. Jackson - Paging Rev. Sharpton - the ONE has a mission for you somewhere in the South. Set your Beebers to stune.
The president became CEO for a brief period of time, and he surrounded himself with yes-men, practically prohibiting any kind of discussion or dissent on far-reaching issues.
Where is he now? The board fired him, and his loyalists either left or have been re-assigned to less dangerous roles.
Nagin gives some credit to Jindal. Nagin once endorsed Jindal. He went against his party but he knows that Jindal is a go getter. This doesn't mean I like Nagin, but NOLA could have worse.
Yeah, and I remember a couple of incidents in Maryland and NYC of blacks being harassed by nooses as well. I think the nooses we out to get them. I hear that nooses are related to mooses, and, although mooses are bad (one once tried to eat my sister), nooses are EVIL.
Yet there were no earmarks for New Orleans in $2.5 trillion of stimulus spending.
Is he now saying that because of Katrina.. FEMA is to become a “welfare” organization to a region.
The man is stating things in that article that he can not keep his promises. I wonder what will happen if a Earthquake or other serious emergency happens somewhere else.
A moose got loose so he got the noose. I think he bit someones sister too. While in the shower of course.
as I said - nooses are really EVIL.
The sole reason for keeping the voting rights act is to keep liberal federal judges in charge of any change in voting laws. The practical effect of this is that Louisiana is unable to pass a voter id requirement.
