2 arrested in FBI raid at Obama appointee's office

WASHINGTON - Two officials in the D.C.'s Office of the Chief Technology Officer have been arrested in a federal bribery sting, sources tell WTOP.

D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer employees Sushil Bansal and 40-year-old Yusuf Acar have been arrested, sources tell WTOP.

Acar was taken into custody Thursday morning by FBI agents at his home in Northwest D.C.

The FBI is now serving a search warrant at the office of D.C.'s Chief Technology Officer, WTOP has learned.

"We are there as part of a continuing ongoing criminal investigation," FBI Washington Field Office spokesperson Katherine Schweit tells WTOP.

Schweit would not comment on the details of the investigation.

More than a dozen FBI agents - including evidence technicians - at the office, located at 1 Judiciary Square on 4th Street in Northwest, WTOP's Mark Segraves reports.

Most of the employees have been told to go home. Other employees have been segregated into a waiting room.

Segraves reports the FBI's search has expanded from 9th floor offices to 10th floor offices.

A spokesman for D.C.'s U.S. Attorney tells WTOP he cannot discuss the investigation, as it is currently sealed.

On March 5, President Barack Obama named D.C. Chief Technology Officer Vivek Kundra as the federal government's chief information officer.

Kundra's last day was March 4.

Kundra, who was in charge of technology in the District since 2007, has been a consultant to Obama since he won the election.

The new position Kundra was slated to fill in the administration is another one of those "czar" jobs Obama is bringing inside the White House. In this move, Obama was getting control of the federal information systems. Scary stuff.

Kundra Named Federal Chief Information Officer
At the beginning of February, D.C.'s Chief Technology Officer, Vivek Kundra, was reportedly the choice of the Obama administration as the new Office of Management and Budget administrator for e-government and information technology. But this morning he's been bumped up, with an announcement from President Obama that Kundra will become the nation's first Federal Chief Information Officer.

"Vivek Kundra will bring a depth of experience in the technology arena and a commitment to lowering the cost of government operations to this position," Obama said in a statement. "I have directed him to work to ensure that we are using the spirit of American innovation and the power of technology to improve performance and lower the cost of government operations. As Chief Information Officer, he will play a key role in making sure our government is running in the most secure, open, and efficient way possible."

Kundra was previously rumored to be on the shortlist for Federal Chief Technology Officer. The Post is quoting sources saying that Obama plans to appoint a chief technology officer who will work closely with Kundra. Both newly created positions will operate out of the White House.

"Born: I was born in New Delhi , India. I moved to Tanzania at the age of one and lived there until I moved to Gaithersburg, MD at the age of 11."

Nope. One simply has to read his profile.

I’m following the WTOP reporter on Twitter.

1 CTO employee arrested. 1 private contractor. He got $350k worth of contracts last year.

So, what is the underlying charge? Were they bribed to award contracts, or bribed to provide false data on something?

The news reports don't say. This story appears to still be breaking, so there aren't a lot of details available yet.

"Federal bribery sting"

Nope, no pattern here folks, move along....

Honestly, Obama's administration is even more blatantly corrupt than Bill Clinton's.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

Acar is an information security officer who was also, according to online requests for proposals, responsible for contracting. Bansal is listed on the city’s procurement website as the CEO of the Advanced Integrated Technologies Corporation, which was awarded two technology contracts last year worth a total of $350,000.

“We know the FBI is over there but that’s all we know,” said a staffer in the D.C. CTO’s office, Mario Field, who was working from a separate location. Another source familiar with the raid said the FBI had sent all staffers other than senior executives home for the day. WTOP reported that agents are searching the 9th and 10th floors of the building.

A White House spokesman had no immediate comment.

We’ll probably never know. An obama appointee GETS ARRESTED and the MSM doesn’t say a word. Or - maybe I’m just missing it.

“That’s the way I finally read it. And that means the title is wrong. The raid was at his former office; not his current office...”

Sure seems like the timing was convenient, like he got the heads up or something.

I made a similar point on this thread: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2205057/posts?page=26#26 Very shoddy reporting.

Thanks for pointing out there's another thread on this subject. It's very frustrating to have more than one thread going on a breaking news story. Because different FReepers post different (or the same) bits of info on the multiple threads, it's hard to follow the updates.

I've come to FR for my news updates daily for over 10 years, but there used to be more self-discipline excercised by posters to make sure they search for a story before starting a new thread. These days, multiple threads only serve to fragment a story and the associated FReeper comments, making FR less reliable as a news discussion forum.

This is not a complaint, but more of a lament, since I have no clue what could be done to improve the situation.

MSM doesn’t say a word. Or - maybe I’m just missing it.

That's a pretty lame complaint when we're hearing news about this still breaking story from multiple MSM outlets, mostly local in the DC metro area, but MSM nonetheless.

This is confusing because it’s poorly written

That's because all the "Real reporters" are tied up reporting on the personal life of an 18 year old girl from Alaska because that is "real News".

While Kundra headed that office?

Yes. But there's still nothing reported yet that says the scope of the investigation goes beyond the 1 employee they arrested.
