[history]
An original Kandinsky, an Andy Warhol, a grand piano and Rolexes by the dozen: even the filthy rich are hocking prized possessions to pay bills. Across the wealthy Beverly Hills enclave, dotted with the luxurious mansions of the nation's rich and famous, pawnshop owners say they haven't had it so good for decades. "......the business people, the big people ... they need money for short time, they're short of cash," said Dina, a former commando in the Israeli army who arrived in the US in the late 1970s.......standing by a display case stuffed with 15 Rolexes and a Patek Philippe watch priced at $160,000. Under California law, pawnshops can hold onto the goods for four months and 10 days after which the owners must redeem them by repaying the loan, or arrange for another four months at an average 4.0% monthly interest rate. Someone tried to hand over an Oscar ....but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has strict rules on selling the famous statuette.

"cash-starved actor tried to hock Oscar"
He'd probably get more for it on eBay.

Id pay about $7.95 for an Oscar. That's about $7.94 more than I'd pay for it.

I’d buy it, put a brush on its head, and use it to clean my toilet.

Where does it say it was an actor?

They're pretty valuable. It's an American institution of immense iconographic stature.

Do you want American music and American literature to also go down?

the oscar belongs ultimately to the academy, It is protected, and the actor will probably be in deep doo doo if this is acted upon.

I had an Oscar once. It ate all the other fish.

Sean Penn? Alec Baldwin? Streisand?I don't think any of these folks are hurting too much right now. Probably one of the "Best Supporting..." winners. These two categories are littered with has-beens and one-hit-wonders.
Or it could've been a "Best Animated Short Documentary in a Foreign Language" winner. I'll bet a lot of these statuette holders don't have two nickels to rub together.

Could be that our current and past efforts are what is already causing the meltdown. It's been at least 15 years since I have been to a theatre.
When I see the likes of Alan Baldwin, Danny Glover, Harry Belafonte, et al on the TV screen, I turn the channel.
A bunch of gold-lined hypocrites all, and most of them need to attend some modern day McCarthy hearings.

It says nowhere in that article that the person trying to hock the Oscar was an actor.

I guess best thing to do is a filmography - see who’s working and who’s not ... lots of movies coming out with lesser known actors and for less pay ....
