Kate Puzey settled into the West African nation Benin almost two years ago as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English.
Relatives said she acclimated quickly, dining with local seamstresses and wise women, and attending a birthday party for a village child. Puzey, 24, wrote on her blog of witnessing a ritual circumcision and anticipating the start of mango season in April.
So her parents, Harry and Lois Puzey of Cumming, were devastated to learn last week that someone had killed their only daughter. Her body was found Thursday outside her home in Benin.

Never defend or help the “underdog”, they are where they are for a reason.
She was fairly attractive. My guess is murder rape. None of those countries are really safe for single girls.

Too bad. So she gets killed in some remote sh*thole trying to be a citizen of the world. Sorry but this story has a familiar ring to it.

Benin, formerly Dahomey. That’s the country that was used as a stand-in for Haiti in Graham Greene’s “The Comedians” back in the late ‘60s. May the young lady rest in peace.
I know it does little to help anything now but at least they have a major suspect. I hope they hang him high. If he is a local is this considered a hate crime in Africa or are these kinds of moronic laws only made in the Western world?

Not safe for anyone, including their own population, for the most part. No doubt this young girl felt the need 'to give back'. . .before she had the experience to do that; and protect herself as well. She should not have been there. A tragedy for her loss of life; and for her family; who will suffer for the rest of theirs.
The Peace Corps, sending naive lefties to get murdered, raped and killed for Peace Corp fat cats in Washington so that they will have jobs, pensions, long lunches and short work weeks.

My daughter has been to Uganda twice on mission trips and didn’t have any problems. Most are very hospitable and love Americans. She still emails with some of them and they call her ocassionally. Really sweet people. She also went to South Africa and didn’t have any problems. I can’t speak for other countries, though.
There are also many American cities not safe for single girls. There are thugs everywhere in the world.
I know a young lady who was sent as an undercover missionary to a Communist country. She attended a university there to learn the native language.
This girl was strikingly pretty and unusually well built. She was also pretty much naive. I couldn’t believe they would send this well meaning but foolish little girl there. She did make it home OK. I suppose she was much safer in a communist country where at least they have laws.
One of our sons served in the Peace Corps in Benin for three years. (He volunteered for an extra year to finish a development project.) He worked for the charitable arm of the Catholic Church there. The country is very poor but democratic and peaceful. There is hardly a safer place for Peace Corps volunteers.
It certainly wasn’t safe for her. Of course a single death does not mean the country is unsafe as a whole. I would like to see some crime statistics for that country before I made any conclusions.
Just being a West African country is suspicious.

Ritual circumcisions are very common on males in Africa when they come of age. I imagine it’s very painful.
