Pro-gun Democrats oppose new assault weapon ban

Sixty-five House Democrats said Wednesday that they would oppose any attempt by the Obama administration to revive a ban on military-style weapons that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994 and President George W. Bush let expire.

The pro-gun Democrats, led by Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., wrote Attorney General Eric Holder that they would "actively oppose any effort to reinstate the 1994 ban, or to pass any similar law."

They urged the administration to avoid a "long and divisive fight over a gun control issue" at a time when Washington needs to concentrate on the economic crisis.

The House letter came a day after Montana's two Democratic senators, Max Baucus and Jon Tester, wrote a similar letter to Holder saying the Justice Department should enforce existing laws before considering new gun ownership restrictions. "We will strongly oppose any legislation that will infringe upon the rights of individual gun owners," they said.

That should effectively kill it on the legislative front.

Assuming they are telling the truth, and they probably are. Not all Dims are as stupid as BO, Reid and Pelosi.

That’s why they are targeting ammunition.

Good deal.

Maybe they should also send Barry a message to concentrate on the financial mess and quit trying to find new stuff to screw up.

I actually saw one on the Chicago News (State rep, maybe). A black woman no less. Some ACORN types (so many of these new “groups” are popping up just like in the old USSR), put body bags outside of her office to represent the number of Chicago public school kids who have been killed this year. She’s opposing a proposed new gun control bill. The woman actually came out and spoke to the group! She says the bill is wrong because it only targets legal gun owners, and criminals aren’t getting their guns legally. Damn, some people actually get it!

There are Dem congressmen like the one who represents my district who are endorsed by the NRA who know they better get their vote right on the gun issue or they’ll be replaced come next election cycle. They are the price Pelosi had to pay to get her majority in congress. She can have her way on a lot of issues but guns isn’t one of them.

I call BS on this one. These Democrats will come to the gun-grabber side once HRH Pelosi twists their arms hard enough.

I’ll believe it when I see it — but it is refreshing to read something positive for a change.

I don’t think so. At least in my district if the congressman renounced his pro gun stance he would be out in a landslide. These are the blue dog Democrats and we can count on them for at least some support in certain areas. Gun control is one of them.

Good news because next time would be permanent, at the same time I wanted them to overreach on divisive issues.

They can still overreach merely by proposing it and revealing the rift in their own ranks.

That should effectively kill it on the legislative front.

Not really, it only needs 50% + 1 to pass in the House. That's 218 votes. There are 257 Dems in the House, less the 65 is 192. That means they only need get 26 RINOS out of the 178 "Republicans" in the House and it passes.

It's also likely to be attached to some other bill as an amendment or section. That's the way we got the original AW ban, as part of the 1994 Omnibus Crime Control Act.

In the Senate there are surely enough RINOs both make up for any Blue Dogs (are there any in the Senate?) and to cut off debate and get it voted on.

We need to keep up the pressure.

Educate those who can be educated and threaten their power base. My congress critter and senators - and the speaker who lives in the next district north of me, are so anti-gun that nothing anyone could say that they would lead them support gun rights but the thought of millions of gun owners mobilizing to throw them out of office and take their power away my cool their ardor for trampling the bill of rights a little.

How true. Many Dems have to look after their own sorry skins for the 2010 elections and they know Obama is going to be no help. Look how bad Clinton did for the candidates he supported. It’s back to the days of fake moderate Democrats as showing their true leftist tendencies will only get them a retirement.
