I’ve thought from the beginning we do an RTC type thing where management and owners of the failed institutions get nothing and the taxpayers get back most or all of thier money from the sale of the assets at market prices to healthier buyers.

Isn’t this pretty much the classical definition of economic fascism?

However, the government did not have such powers when it came to AIG, forcing the government to pump tens of billions into the company, which then funneled money to its trading partners, such as Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank.

But I thought that insurance was regulated on a state-to-state basis. IMO, what Obama is asking for is further Federal encroachment on the powers of the States (Tenth Amendment).

Wonderful, Geitner, or Barney Frank, can take over a bank on a whim....say one of those days they want too or need too, to cover their own ass.

The band of thugs who inexorably took over the U.S. Government in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged were constantly complaining that they didn't have enough power.

Can this encompass all financial institutions? I thought the story I heard said it would expand beyond banks to include all financial institutions, but there is so much information being thrown out there I could be wrong.

As someone said, this is not change and is not new...

Legislature grants Chávez broad new powers to shape Venezuela

LA PAZ, Bolivia: Venezuela's legislature on Wednesday granted President Hugo Chávez the power to rule by decree for 18 months, enhancing his ability to both increase government control over the economy and assert greater personal authority over areas of society he considers crucial to his aspiration to build a socialist state.

Nah. Better to let them run amok, profit on the way up, and then stick us with the tab on the way down. Again.

When the left constantly screamed about fascism under Bush, I think they were projecting more than anything else. They wanted to have that control.

We got into this jam when we gave a Democrat president, Jimmy Carter, legislation forcing banks to make imprudent loans to further Carter's social goals. These goals also appealed to Bill Clinton who loosed his Attorney General, Janet Reno, on the banks to intimidate them into making imprudent loans.

Meanwhile, Democrats infested these lending institutions and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and bought off government supervision with campaign contributions to Democrats. Proper government supervision such as was permitted by the Democrats revealed that the Democrats running institutions like Freddie Mac were kiting mortgages and cooking books.

Government involvement with these institutions has proved so beneficial to the Republic that Barak Obama wants to expand it.

In fact, Obama wants to exploit the AIG bonuses to justify even more government intrusion in our financial institutions when it was government intrusion that funded these bonuses and explicitly provided that they should be paid.

At some point Republicans have got to articulate a coherent case against the dangerous intrusions of government now being attempted by the Democrats. As luck would have it they have already been handed a club with which to beat the Democrats which fits perfectly and is ideally adapted the task. The bonus fiasco at AIG is representative of the mismanagement approaching buffoonery of government endeavors. Oppose Obamas's usurpation in virtually nationalizing our banks and rendering them as user friendly as the motor vehicle office and as efficient as the Post Office.

Recite the history of subprime loans and the governments complicity in the fiasco. Connect it to the burlesque of AIG. Ask why Obama wants to further impoverish the nation for the such dubious goals. Predict that when it fails, as it must, we will only be poorer. Only an ideologue would persist in expanding government in the face of the AIG and Fannie Mae fiascoes.

This is a good place to draw the line and began the Republican resurgence. Tie it all together and raise hell. Tell the people that our failure is a failure of government not of capitalism.

That overreaching illegal Negro in the White House, who has never run ANY enterprise other than organizing black welfare broodmares, black bastards, self loathing delusional morons and street thugs - is in belief that he and the dumb asses in Congress who gave birth to the current financial crises are competent to take on GREATER responsibilities?????

Amazing!

The current illegal president, his administration and most of Congress are as delusional as a flea climbing up the leg of an elephant with rape in mind....

Neither are equipped for the task.
