Has a ‘Katrina Moment’ Arrived? (New York Times Slams Obama Alert)
New York Times ^ | March 21, 2009 | Frank Rich

Posted on 03/22/2009 3:39:39 AM PDT by Zakeet

A Charming visit with Jay Leno won’t fix it. A 90 percent tax on bankers’ bonuses won’t fix it. Firing Timothy Geithner won’t fix it. Unless and until Barack Obama addresses the full depth of Americans’ anger with his full arsenal of policy smarts and political gifts, his presidency and, worse, our economy will be paralyzed. It would be foolish to dismiss as hyperbole the stark warning delivered by Paulette Altmaier of Cupertino, Calif., in a letter to the editor published by The Times last week: “President Obama may not realize it yet, but his Katrina moment has arrived.”

[Snip]

To get ahead of the anger, Obama must do what he has repeatedly promised but not always done: make everything about his economic policies transparent and hold every player accountable. His administration must start actually answering the questions that officials like Geithner and Summers routinely duck.

Inquiring Americans have the right to know why it took six months for us to learn (some of) what A.I.G. did with our money. We need to understand why some of that money was used to bail out foreign banks. And why Goldman, which declared that its potential losses with A.I.G. were “immaterial,” nonetheless got the largest-known A.I.G. handout of taxpayers’ cash ($12.9 billion) while also receiving a TARP bailout. We need to be told why retention bonuses went to some 50 bankers who not only were in the toxic A.I.G. unit but who left despite the “retention” jackpots. We must be told why taxpayers have so little control of the bailed-out financial institutions that we now own some or most of. And where are the M.R.I.’s from those “stress tests” the Treasury Department is giving those banks?

That’s just a short list.

When he was elected, I looked at the hype and mindless revelry around me (in liberal Boston there was plenty of that) and I said to myself “one term president”.

When Jimmy Carter was elected he was similar to Obama... people saw him as an outsider, a reformer (after Watergate), he had liberal ideals blah blah blah.

If Obama produces another Ronald Reagan I think conservatives will be more than pleased.

"I know I’m having a tin foil moment but here goes. The NYT is being encouraged by Rats to write some articles criticle of Dems and the POTUS so it won’t look so scandalous when congress endows them with bailout cash.

Nice "follow the money" insight...

“The NYT is trying to tell the President he’s screwing up big time.”

True!

The only hope his administration has is to be found in his lies about being the ***post partisan hope for America.***

The post racial hope for America.

As an aside, the Seatle Post Intelligencer is now in it’s post-partisan post-mortem stage.

Unless Obama locates an actual ounce of actual American blood in his constitution, his administration is having it’s Katrina moment. Post haste.

Will conservative republicans be smart enough to take advantage of the opportunity which awaits them?

**sigh**

Probably not, at least not smart enough to seize the opportunity and hang onto it for more than two election cycles before they succumb to the inside the beltway disease and turn into RINO's....

What I'd like to see happen is a new round of young Conservatives seeing the gravity of the foul situation we find ourselves in, the opportunity at hand presented by that foul situation and then go about putting forth a serious challenge to RINO's and Libs who have screwed us and the country over. There certainly are enough of them to go after and it should be an easy sell with the level of public distrust and anger towards the gubmint that currently exists. I think it's long past time to put two thirds of Congress out to pasture and start fresh. Probably will be closer to the first scenario, though, unfortunately......

What can Commie Obozo do to reassure the investing public so that they will move away from the panic?

If I am wrong, I will admit it. But what I see now is more of the same into the future.

I believe the people who really put him in office are not in the U.S. He and they intend to destroy what we have left of our right of free association.

I will not live in a totalitarian country. I will not be a good little Dhemmi!

Sorry, but that is how I see it.
