The writer is sharing his ignorance with us there.
Red light camera citations are civil, not criminal, in nature.
Really? Ever been behind someone scared of a light cam? They will make it through. You won't.
I can give you a case of shortened light be a hazard right now. I have a passenger with me who could be harmed by me making sudden abrupt stops. As such I avoid doing so if possible. In approaching lights I time myself and my speed with light and traffic. I know the timing of most lights. I reach a point of go or no go and can not turn back. This timing for me is a couple seconds more than most drivers maybe two or three. Why should I get a ticket on a shortened for the camera light? If safety is the issue I have a passenger in a wheel chair. It requires slower stops. But reality also says I must move with the traffic as well. A shortened light puts my passenger {wife} at risk to a rear end collision.
Yes on occasion I do cross right directly under a red. Light cameras do not take traffic conditions into consideration where a policeman would. In general I Boycott areas where Light Cameras are used. Those areas do not get my business and Oak Ridge Tennessee is going on my list of such places. In general I did spent $500 a month shopping there.
Thanks to some business expansions in North Knoxville and in Clinton, Tennessee where cameras are not used I can get all I need elsewhere away from Light Cameras. Let the illegals in Oak Ridge pay the fines. Ooops I forgot they no got no licenses anyway and if they do it's likely bogus as is the vehicle registration. They no got no state required insurance either but I see very few illegals pulled over by Oak Ridge City Police. They mostly focus on an area called Scarbro and a different minority lives there. I wonder why? The sure aren't hard to find.
Ahh..
But that would be destruction of public property
I may be Libertarian, but I do not
damage other people's property
Nor would I want them destroying mine
A little Civil Disobedience however...
Are you asking what caliber to use, or what? ;)
I disagree. Do the crime, pay the fine.
There are a few in Cleveland (TN) where I work. I hate those things. People slam on their brakes when the light turns yellow or hit the gas and fly through them because they are afraid of getting a ticket. I avoid all those intersections.
In Miami-Dade County, they've just introduced a limited redgreen light system for highway access. (No yellow). I recall seeing those lights in Georgia in the 60s, and I understand that NYC had them too.
The car being rear-ended in your photo was likely stopped: There's no way for that kind of speed differential (and that kind of crash violence) to exist otherwise at an intersection.
Why do you say that like it is a bad thing?
Then it would be a crime to actually pay the fine as it encourages bad behavior by local politicians.
Make them turn every road into a toll road and see what happens to them.
The cameras belong to RedFlex or another bandit, outlaw red light camera company.
That is a private company. Our government hates private companies.
It is patriotic to destroy these companies' assets.
It's not a crime. If it were a crime, violators would have access to the courts in order to question their accusers and present a defense.
It is a bad thing. There is something called personal privacy. I know some people don’t have a clue as to what that means. These people go around spreading people’s privacy-expected moments like if it were peanut butter on a toast.
You need to read the article. By statute the camera citations are civil in name, but since they are punitive in nature they carry the usual constitutional protections for criminal accusations under Tennessee case law.
They do, just like any other law infraction. All they have to do is hire a defense attorney and prove they didn't break the law.
They did a good thing over in Mississippi:
Barbour signs ban on red-light cameras

My wife has been ticketed twice for Kingsport redlight violations caught on camera. In both cases it was late at night after emergency visits to the extended care facility. Both were the result of right turn on red where the change occurred at the last second and there were no other cars present at the intersection or in view of the camera.
The cost is $100 per ticket.
When the law is declared unconstitutional I will seek refunds
I remember a law school case where a magistrate could not be paid based on a percentage of the fines.
Here the camera company is a defacto “magistrate” which decides is is or is not guilty. The magistrate gets a percentage fo the fines collected.
mythbusters is not always super scientific which is comes to disproving ways to “violate the law”.
It’s better than any proof you offered to support the clear spray product.
