(CNN) -- The United States shares the blame for Mexican drug trafficking and the attendant violence that has killed thousands in the past year alone, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday.
"Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade," she said en route to Mexico City, according to pool reports.
"Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians. So, yes, I feel very strongly we have a co-responsibility."
Clinton arrived in the Mexican capital a day after the United States unveiled its plan to improve security along its long southern border.
Clinton will meet with President Felipe Calderon and other Mexican leaders to discuss the bilateral strategies for the drug war. But her aides said she will also make an effort to show that the U.S.-Mexican relationship is not restricted to matters dealing with drug violence.
"We are going to demonstrate that we are spending it in an accountable and effective manner that will assist the Mexicans" in law enforcement and justice, she said.
The United States needs to stop the flow of guns, body armor and night-vision goggles to the cartels, Clinton said.
"These criminals are outgunning the law enforcement officials," she said.
"When you go into a gunfight or are trying to round up these bad guys and they have military-style equipment that is much better than yours, you start out at a disadvantage. Since we know the vast majority of that comes from our country, we are going to help stop it from getting there in the first place."

Al Gore Jr, she’s talkin ‘bout YOU!
“There she goes again” strike down the evil USA.
Blame the victim.
Funny she didn’t say a thing about the Mexican governments help in the illegal invasion of its people into our country.
I don’t expect to hear anything about it in the week to come either.
Hillary needs to be talking to old “vacuum cleaner” nose. I don’t “share the blame” for sh**! I’ve never done drugs and never will.
Yet again, more self-loathing from liberal (socialist) Democrats. I’m so darn sick of this crap!
The Barking Chicken strikes again.
We’ll take the guns back if you guys take the Mexicans back.
Airport in Arkansas...begins with “M”...Clinton...Drugs...
Well, how come when she was 1st lady, her administration did not do a thing to curb it. Oh..wait...Bill did not inhale...oops my bad.
Sounds like an excuse to send tens of billions of dollars to Mexico.
Sounds like an excuse to send tens of billions of dollars to Mexico.
No.
We don’t.
I agree with her 100%. Just look at the White House druggies, alone, who are personally supporting the Mexican drug cartels. Every time the news shows Bill Clinton, he has that glazed-over look like he’s just come down off a bad trip. He’s a self-admitted user. Then, look at what obama looked like on 60 Minutes this week. He was giggling like a school girl....he was probably doing a couple of lines in the Green Room before the show. Remember, he was the guy who bragged in his books about using smoke and smack in college, and selling it to support his habit.
Well, that MIGHT be a very small part of it.
A larger part is the LEGAL export (sales) of heavy weapons by the government to the Mexican government, which then deploys them to the corrupt armed forces & police, who then 'redistribute' them to their cartel allies.
An even larger part most likely lies farther south, in an idyllic Peoples Paradise formerly awash oil dollars, with Chinese & Russian 'friends'.
Perhaps she’s taking a dig at the insatiable TOTUS or should we call him TOOTUS ?

Pot had helped, and booze;
maybe a little blow when you could afford it.”
I assume this isn’t a reference to Larry Sinclair.
