We all like to joke about Mexico, but in reality Mexico is a fairly important country. (It has the 11th largest economy in the world, believe it or not.) The narcotraficanto troubles in the north of Mexico, while serious, are more regional in nature than national, affecting only 7 or 8 of Mexico’s states (it has 31). Corruption is endemic across Mexico, of course, but the local citizens, cops, and gangsters in most places have established a modus vivendi that keeps everyday life more or less normal.

One approach to fixing Mexico’s drug and economic problems (along with our border problem) would be for the Mexican federal government to cede the northernmost seven states to us. Once under US law, these states could be cleaned of large-scale narcoterrorists and corrupt officials and given extensive tax breaks along with infrastructure support. All this done well could see these “top seven” states achieving U.S. style order and prosperity levels within a decade or so, giving Uncle Sam plenty of new taxpayers, a demographic bonanza, and vast new resources, including minerals, agricultural land, and several excellent ports.

Yes. And a permanent Democrat majority.

Good idea. I think those states are where a lot of the new industry has been built.

Maybe Hillary would be willing to take it on personally to clean them up. I know she moans over how we to the North provide the demand for all the drugs the cartels delivers.

I’ve always thought we should just annex 10 miles a year. In a decade we’d have a port on the Sea of Cortze and all of the lawless border regions would be tamed. To the liberals that are unable to judge one nation/culture/political/econimic system better than another just take a quick comparison of Arizona and Sonora or San Diego and Tijuana. 170 Years ago they were all Mexican.

No way...Jose!

I do not want Mexico’s northern (and mainly poorest) states to become part of the US...that would be an economic catastrophie bigger than any Obama could create

We would have to give welfare to most of them...because most are uneducated or undereducated....and I definitely do not want a former Mexican taking a job away from a hard-working American...or have hard-working Americans subsidize Third Worlders

Mexico’s economy is weak....its per capita GDP is low, and gets lower every day. Millions have lost their jobs...many shipped off to Communist China (in return, Communist China supplies the pseudophedrine so the Mex’s can cook up crystal meth)

If you really want to fix this Mexico crisis...you must:

1. Abrogate NAFTA, esp all parts pertaining to Mexico (Free Trade has failed in Mexico....millions have lost jobs and/or ability to sustain selves). NAFTA also enables the drug cartels easier access over the border...allowing them to use “trade rules” to compromise the system (esp with Mexican trucking companies)

2. Deport all illegals....and prevent any new illegals from arriving. You do not destroy America while Mexico collapses

3. Execute all violent illegal alien Mexicans confined in US prisons. Most are involved in drugs and gangs...and would put fear into the cartels....note that Mexico has no death penalty...and the cartels have no fear of being executed for violent crimes in Mexico. Start executing the cartels and gangs...and you begin to turn the tide.

4. Strong US military presence on the Mexican border...and armed with nukes. If the Mexican govt and/or drug cartels try to invade the US border (trust meither)...I want to be able to vaporize Mexican cities in response. No more coddling that Third World craphole...whether it is its government or the American hate/racist groups like La Raza (The Race).

Strong measures....I know. Weak measures will not work. The US will be defending itself from not only the drug cartels....but also the Mexican government.

No, I believe it is broader and more systemic than you have described. Merida, Yucatan has had headless bodies dumped in the streets. It is an old style and fairly conservative city/state.

Mexico was founded on a policy of corruption by corrupt Spanish masters - racists, who conquered corrupt racists. It goes very deep.

You’re thinking creatively and completely outside the box.

You must be flamed. Immediately and without mercy. :-)

In reality, we’ve already inherited a large chunk of northern Mexico’s social ills anyway. We might as well get the benefits of having those areas as part of the U.S. Keep in mind that Texas, New Mexico, California, and Arizona were all part of Mexico at one time. I’d say they did pretty well. No reason to think the northern states of Mexico wouldn’t get there over time if they joined up.

Yeah, it would cost us a mint in welfare and policing costs in the short term, but as I said....we’re already paying a large part of that bill right now.
