From the day the founding Fathers risked their liberty and life by signing the Declaration of Independence, there has been those who have wanted to sink this great ship called the United States of America. Well 143 years later the good ship America took a torpedo hit that at the time seemed like just another glancing blow. What many still consider the greatest step forward in equality for the sexes, was more then just a glancing blow however. It was in fact a deadly strike that entered the very heart of the ship and has been smoldering since. The damage caused by the 19th amendment was slow in its destruction, but after almost 100 years we can now see how complete the destruction really was.

If you want to say that I support women’s right to vote with supporting abortion - that is extremely far fetched. I am a Christian lady and I support life. God has raised up woman and used them throughout history. I’m leaving this thread. If I stay on, I may want to leave FR.
IMHO, it’s not women who got us into this mess. I think that only taxpayers should be allowed to vote. They’re the ones who have a stake in the outcome. The rest just vote for more ‘government benefits.’
I’ll just wait to hear Oprah’s views on this topic.
I think the turning point was when they said everyone could vote; whereas, before, only property owners could vote.

At this point I would be happy to limit the vote to citizens who actually pay taxes.
When we go back into our Republic's history, though, the terms "conservative" and "liberal" and "Republican" and "Democrat" cut differently from today. When 150 years ago, my family was so staunchly Republican, being strong abolitionists, they were also pushing for large Federal government.
And although there have been fluctuations, I think it's pretty clear that FR would have been a Federalist site 200 years ago, while my Jeffersonian views would have been "Liberal."
You know, your essay's topic has been an interest of mine for a while. I have met many very intelligent, independent-minded, self-proclaimed "feminist" women who agree with your conclusion--that it was suffrage for women that sent us on a downward path.

While many in the period didn’t live up to it, there used to be the concept of a gentlemen and it meant something. In my lifetime (and I was born in 1959) I missed most of it thanks to the 1960’s (which were the result of much mining of landscape for decades before).
I’m aware of the defects of the past and how it used to be but I still think it was better than the tapioca we have today.
And I have actually been in Pakistan (in the 1980’s) and have seen what they have there - real American men won’t go for that, not the decently raised ones. It is not pretty over there.
You know, I am a woman and I have pondered this very topic. Perhaps on;y men who pass a reading test and can show proper identifcation and be a taxpaying landowner should vote.
I thought you just got done saying that American authors wrote in a pro-male, anti-suffragette fashion. And that that style was emblematic and axiomatic in what I presume you are referring to as the 19th century. Henry James wasn’t anti woman. America, starting with the Puritans, right up to the frontiers people championed woman’s rights. It’s threaded throughout the culture. Europe and the rest of the world never caught up.
The problem here is not the right to vote, it’s that we don’t have candidates who are sexy enough. V’s wife.

I do agree, but my point cannot be discounted. Given the turn of events since 1920. This country never changed as fast when we gave non landowners a right to vote. It was when women received the right to vote.

Where I live, renters vote themselves school tax levies which I and other homeowners pay for. Their portion of the raised taxes are distributed amongst the rest of the renters in their development/building.
It's a nice racket. Who knows how long it will last?

Twain and Poe were progressives. I mean, let’s start with Tom Sawyer. Do you recall that The Grapes of Wrath were written almost 100 years ago? That’s a very progressive book. Isn’t that the point? Progressivism? You and others here are confusing progressivism, feminism and liberalism. You are wrong here. The ideas of the progressives had merit: slavery was wrong, and they used a variety of logical arguments to prove that case. The vote for women was logical, as they argued it. What is not logical is communism and socialism. But it’s not just women buying that. V’s wife.
