WASHINGTON (AP) - A Senate defense committee chairman says Pentagon budget will include large, painful cuts. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin said Tuesday that major program cuts will not be pushed off until the 2011 budget, but will be included when Defense Secretary Robert Gates sends his spending plan to the president later this month.

Here's the problem as I see it. The US cannot afford to be the dominant superpower while running up deficits and having entitlement programs. Something has to give. After years of fiscal mismanagement and expanding government we simply cannot do what we have become accustomed to.

It's already cut from my perspective as a DoD contractor. Only 30% of my work was DoD in 2008. It's zero in 2009. Contractors without work find something else to do. They won't be available when the SHTF and the panic sets in. Even my non DoD federal contracts are zero. If that stuff doesn't get funded, I'll be shipping all the hardware to the contract admninistrator. There won't be room to sit in his office. My basement will be cavernous...again.

Levin's US Army Cuts:

1. Replace the M-16 and variants currently issued with 1865 Single Shot, Trap Door, Springfield. This will save on ammunition costs.
   
2. Replace all 'SAWs' (Squad automatic weapons) and 'Machine Guns' with 1873 'Repeating' Winchesters, in 44-40 cal.
   
3. Replace the 9mm Beretta with 1873 Single Action Army Colts, also in 44-40 cal. (ammo can be used in rifle or pistol - saves a lot of money.
   
4. Replace all Body Armor with White Flags. (Used once, Made in France).
   
5. Eliminate all Kevlar Helmets. Since the troops will be surrendering almost immediately upon engagement, no head protection is required.
   
6. Abrams Tanks to be phased out in two years. Replaced by Mule Pulled Wagons (MPWs) with (1) One, hand cranked Gatling Gun. (preferably chambered in 44-40)
7. Strykers to be phased out in two years and replaced by Mules. Soldiers riding Mule to be armed with (1) 44-40 Colt SAA and (1) sword (not too sharp to avoid accidental injury).
   
8. Hummvees to be phased out over two years. Walking is much healthier.
   
9. ALL Special Operation Units; Special Forces, Rangers, etc, to be armed with One (1) Cross Bow, Six Arrows and one (1) 'fighting knife'. Blade not to exceed 3" in length to avoid injury.
   
10. All helicopters to be phased out in two years and replaced by Mule Pulled Conestoga Wagons (MPCWs).

I consider fiscal discipline a key element of a nation's long term sustainability. When you overspend and grow your government you weaken its ability to defend itself. At some point you just cannot borrow the money any longer.

It is what it is.

Now, you could say that we should just cut the entitlements but how do you square that with the citizens who were overtaxed for years with the promise that the money would be returned to them in the form of SS? Toss in the fact that liberalism has created a cancer on society in the form of poverty that is passed down from generation to generation. If these masses are not kept then the risk of riots increases greatly.

Gates won’t be SECDEF for long. Obama and Gates are probably already filling in Westley Clark on everything necessary to be SECDEF, which he will be in May of 2010. And, Gates has said that he will slash the defense budget to the bone and preside over abandoning Afghanistan.
