Gingrich Keeps Quiet on Catholic Conversion (received into Church over the past weekend)
US News ^ | March 30, 2009 | Dan Gilgoff

Posted on 03/31/2009 12:01:32 PM PDT by NYer

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich converted to Roman Catholicism over the weekend at St. Joseph's Church in Washington, D.C. So far, Gingrich has been conspicuously quiet about his conversion. He didn't mention it in an interview with me earlier this month that focused on his stepped-up efforts to organize religious conservatives and promote religious liberty issues.

An enthusiastic Twitterer, the former speaker has gone tweetless since Saturday. Best I can tell, Newt's one recent mention of Catholicism was a tweet last Tuesday about President Obama's forthcoming appearance at Notre Dame: "It is sad to see notre dame invite president obama to give the commencement address Since his policies are so anti catholic values."

I checked with his media team, which says that Newt is declining interview requests about his conversion for now but that he may open up later in the year.

Well Professor, in the Museum of Really Bad Christian Apologetics, your post #54 will have a display case near the front door.

Well, now that creates a pickle. Was I trying to insult LibLieSlayer, or did I mean post #57?

What didn’t you like about post #57? Except for staring at myself in the mirror, rereading that post is my favorite pastime! LOL! Sarc/

Re: Gary Cooper’s conversion.
Here’s a nice little remembrance by his daughter, Maria:

In the mid to late fifties, my father’s conversion to Catholicism started silently. He never discussed much about it but simply started joining us for Mass more often. The ostensible reason was to hear the good sermons given by a dynamic young priest, Father Harold Ford, dubbed by my father as “Father Tough Stuff.” Father Ford didn’t give hellfire and brimstone, but he was a very human and with-it man. My mother invited him over for a drink one afternoon, thinking there might be some deep and profound conversations about matters of the spirit. Think again! He and my father disappeared into the gun room and as far as I can tell all they talked about was hunting, fishing, and scuba diving. Father Ford became a scuba buddy and joined us diving in the large marineland of the Pacific tank where we all cavorted with its inhabitants.

I think we can all safely acknowledge that only Missouri Synod Lutherans (early service, red hymnal liturgy) have a guaranteed ticket to Heaven.

I hope I didn’t misunderstand your question.

Well, you did.

Are you able to document what you asserted in the post I was addressing?

Though divorced in a civilian court, one is still married in the Church. If one remarries in a civilian ceremony, one is committing adultery in the eyes of the Church. One may live that way, but not take Communion as one would be living in a state of sin. But one would not automatically be excommunicated.
