Schindler Family Attends Mass for Terri Schiavo Hosted by Ave Maria University

St. Petersburg, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The Schindler family attended a special Mass on Tuesday, which marked the fourth anniversary of the painful starvation and dehydration euthanasia death of Terri Schiavo. Ave Maria University, a Florida-based Catholic college, hosted the mass, which saw the entire Schindler family attend.

Bob and Mary Schindler, Terri's parents, joined their other children Bobby Schindler and Suzanne Vitadamo for a ceremony in Terri's honor.

As the Schindlers prayed with participants for other disabled people who face the same euthanasia concerns, they placed a picture of Terri on her wedding day on the altar and joined more than 400 people in remembering her life.

The Mass was part of the International Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Terri Schindler Schiavo that the Schindler family jointly co-sponsors with the Terri Schiavo foundation and Priests for Life.

The two organizations established this day last year to foster education, prayer, and activism regarding discrimination against the disabled.

"God is using Terri to impact the world in a very special way," Bobby Schindler told the News Press.

Thomas Monaghan, founder and chancellor of Ave Maria University, told the newspaper the college was happy to help with the ceremony.

“We're very big on pro-life,” he said. “Our purpose is to fight evil and pro-life is center stage, and that’s where we want to be.”

Fr. Frank Pavone, who was with Bobby and Suzanne at Terri’s bedside as she died, recalls that painful day and the support from pro-life advocates and others.

"As we consoled Terri and prayed with her, what I felt most strongly was the presence of countless people around the world who, by their love, prayers, and tears, accompanied Terri and her family through those difficult days," he said. "I am confident that these same individuals, families, and Churches will want to observe Terri’s Day."

Senate Rejects Amendment Protecting Abortion-Conscience Rights for Doctors (Action Alert!)

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Senate on Thursday night rejected an amendment from a pro-life senator that would have provided conscience protection on abortion for doctors and medical centers. The amendment comes at a time when President Barack Obama is considering overturning further protections.

Sen Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, sponsored an amendment to the Senate budget bill that would protect the right of conscience for health care workers.

His budget amendment was to "protect the freedom of conscience for patients and the right of health care providers to serve patients without violating their moral and religious convictions."

However, the Senate rejected the conscience amendment on a 56-41 vote with most of the chamber's Democrats voting against it along with a handful of pro-abortion Republicans.

Three Democrats joined most of the Senate Republicans in voting for the Coburn amendment. . .

Latest 40 Days for Life Pro-Life Campaign Ends, Abortion Centers Close as Result

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The latest 40 Days for Life campaign has ended, but many pro-life advocates say they are so encouraged by their involvement that they want to continue. Shawn Carney, 40 Days for Life's spring campaign director, tells Lifenews.com that it has resulted in closing abortion centers.

He said, "If there's a main theme I'm hearing from the tens of thousands of participants around the country at the completion of this spring's 40 Days for Life campaign, it's 'We don't want to stop!'"

"People have witnessed first-hand that a prayerful presence outside abortion facilities saves lives, and they know they will see additional results by continuing their vigils," Carney added. . .

Canadian Archbishop: ‘Early Induction’ on Babies with Lethal Fetal Anomaly is “Direct Abortion”

TORONTO, April 3, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The scandal of priests advising mothers whose babies are diagnosed with lethal fetal anomalies that having an early induction in such cases is not opposed to Catholic teaching is not new. The problem was already apparent in 2002, and denounced by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast in a column in The Catholic Register.

The issue came to the fore recently after LifeSiteNews.com published an exposé of such recommendations and procedures at St. Joseph’s Catholic hospital in London Ontario. Fr. Michael Prieur the ethical director at the hospital is responsible for the practice and believes it in synch with Catholic teaching.

Two mothers revealed to LSN that they were advised by Fr. Prieur that early induction would be permissible according to Catholic teaching since their children were diagnosed with lethal fetal anomalies. In both cases, the mothers' lives were not in any danger from their pregnancy, they were not asking for early induction and their strong sense that it was wrong caused them to reject the advice given to them by Father Prieur. . .

An amazing story of an abortion survivor.

Abortion Survivor Sarah Smith

Twins -- one aborted, one survives!

Sarah tells her story . . .

"Twenty-nine years ago, my mother decided to have an abortion. At the time, she was pregnant with twins, but nobody knew this, not even her doctor. My tiny brother and I were both there growing in her womb, until that dreadful day. Before the abortion, we were both alive. Moments later, I was alone.

It's frightening to think I was almost aborted when my mom had a D&C abortion. Somehow, miraculously, I survived! My twin brother wasn't so lucky. Andrew was aborted and we lost him forever.

Several weeks later, my mother was shocked to feel me kicking in her womb. She already had five children and she knew what it felt like when a baby kicked in the womb. She instantly knew that somehow she was still pregnant. She went back to the doctor and told him she was still pregnant...that she had made a big mistake and that she wanted to keep this baby.

To this day, my mother deeply regrets that abortion. I know the pain is unbearable for her at times when she looks at me and knows she aborted my twin brother. Mom says 'the protective hand of Almighty God saved my life . . . that God's hand covered and hid me in her womb, and protected me from the scalpel of death. . .

Doctor Mehmet Oz Tells Oprah's Audience Embryonic Stem Cell Research Debate is Dead

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A recent appearance by Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiovascular surgeon at Columbia University and a regular on Oprah Winfrey's popular eponymous television program, is generating buzz within pro-life circles. During the program, Oz told Americans the truth about embryonic stem cell research.

Oz made it clear that the "stem cell debate is dead" mostly in part because embryonic stem cells have yet to catch up to their adult stem cell and iPS cell counterparts.

The comments are drawing interest because Oz made them in front of the iconic television personality and embryonic stem cell research advocate Michael J. Fox who has warped and twisted the positions of pro-life advocates during previous elections.

"The problem with embryonic stem cells is that embryonic stem cells come from embryos, like all of us were made from embryos, and those cells can become any cell in the body," Oz explained.

"But it's very hard to control them and so they can become cancer," Oz added, pointing to the efficacy problems of the cells causing tumors after injection into animals during experiments. . .

Mentally disabled man taken off respirator

BATAVIA, Ohio, April 7 (UPI) -- A mentally disabled Ohio man suffering from terminal cancer has been removed from the respirator and feeding tube keeping him alive.

Ronnie Dragoo's sisters want their brother's life to end peacefully with as little pain as possible, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. But Cindy Dragoo of Miami, Ohio, and Donna Dragoo Theile of Newtonsville have no authority to make medical decisions for their brother because he is a ward of the state, so he remained on the respirator.

"I have prayed to God to have him die," Theile said. "No one deserves this."

The sisters said that their brother is unable to speak in full sentences.

"He doesn't know what dying means," Cindy Dragoo said.

Kathleen Rinto of Advocacy and Protective Services Inc., which has a contract with Ohio to serve as guardians for the mentally disabled, said that two doctors must sign off on decisions that could end someone's life and that the person must be in a coma or terminally ill, the newspaper said. . .

Poll: Americans Want Obama to Keep Abortion Conscience Clause in Place

Washington, DC -- A new national poll of Americans finds a strong majority want President Barack Obama to keep conscience protections in place for doctors and medical centers. The president is considering rescinding the protections the Bush administration adopted to enforce three federal conscience laws.

The protections make it more clear and provide support for doctors or medical facilities that feel pressured to participate in abortions.

Support for this new regulation outpaced opposition by a margin of more than 2-to-1 (63% vs. 28%).

Former Vatican Ambassador: Notre Dame Scandal Will "Wake Catholics Up"

NOTRE DAME, Indiana, April 7, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A former ambassador to the Vatican has criticized the University of Notre Dame's decision to honor President Obama by inviting him to deliver the school's commencement address and to receive an honorary law degree. The former ambassador noted, however, that the scandal will likely serve to "wake Catholics up" to the impact of pro-abortion celebrities on Catholic culture. At the same time, the founder of the Acton Institute, the influential Rev. Robert Sirico, a prominent Catholic priest and writer, has expressed his "shame and sorrow" over the invitation by sending back a statue of Mary given to him by the University.

On FOX News' "Hannity" show April 3, Jim Nicholson, former secretary of Veterans Affairs and former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, told host Sean Hannity that while he considered University president Fr. John Jenkins "a fine man," he agreed with U.S. bishops who concluded Notre Dame "made a grievous error, and it's an embarrassment to themselves and the Church."

"I mean nothing, nothing is more fundamentally important to Catholic doctrine today than the sanctity of life, and this president who has a lot of attributes and has created a lot of excitement being the first African-American president and so forth has just had an assault, an onslaught on life the two months he's been in office," said Nicholson.

"I think that may be one of the redeeming results of this is that it's going to kind of wake Catholics up," he added. . .

"Utterly Appalled" Bishop Bruskewitz Issues Stinging Condemnation to "Formerly Catholic" ND

LINCOLN, Nebraska, April 9, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of the Lincoln Diocese today made public his condemnation of the Notre Dame scandal. His comments bring the number of U.S. bishops to 30 protesting the school's invitation to President Obama to speak at commencement and receive an honorary law degree May 17.

Bishop Bruskewitz supplied the letter addressed to University president Fr. John Jenkins today to the Cardinal Newman Society, who is hosting a petition against the scandal, now bearing well over a quarter million signatures (http://www.notredamescandal.com).

"Permit me to add my name as well to the long list of Bishops of the Catholic Church who are utterly appalled at your dedication to immorality and wrong-doing represented by your support for the obscenity called 'The Vagina Monologues' and your absolute indifference to the murderous abortion program and beliefs of this President of the United States," reads the brief letter, dated April 3.

"The fact that you have some sort of past connection with the State of Nebraska makes it all the more painful that the Catholic people here have to see your betrayal of the moral teachings of the Catholic Church," Bruskewitz wrote.  "I can assure you of my prayers for your conversion, and for the conversion of your formerly Catholic University." . . .

“We're looking at bankruptcy” (Oldest abortion clinic in USA)

Unable to pay its rent, an Oakland abortion clinic in business for 36 years has announced it is closing. The Women’s Choice Clinic at 570 14th Street, which claims to be the oldest abortion clinic in the U.S., made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.

The clinic and its leadership have long been associated with the radical Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights (BACORR), which in January organized counter-demonstrations to the West Coast Walk for Life and has characterized pro-lifers as “anti-abortion bigots.”

Linci Comy, executive director of the clinic for 21 years and on its staff since 1977, is a longtime member of BACORR. She told the Oakland Tribune on Tuesday, "We haven't been able to make our rent payments. We've been waiting for the checks from Medi-Cal and they're not forthcoming. To balance the state budget, California has frozen payments for services already provided, and for us, that is a fatal decision. With that and issues of the economy, it all came down on us in March. Our landlord let us know we have to be out in a couple of weeks. We're looking at bankruptcy.”

Remembering the Nazis’ War on the ‘Genetically Unfit’

BEFORE the Nazis began the mass murder of Jews, they started to sterilize or kill hundreds of thousands of their own — non-Jewish Germans, including children, who were considered mentally or physically defective. They even issued a “Ten Commandments for Choosing a Mate” that advised against marrying a person with an undesirable characteristic, or the possibility of inheriting one: “Never marry the one good person from a bad family.”

This intensive war against the “genetically unfit” is one of the areas explored in “Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race,” a handsome and harrowing exhibition about the Nazis’ use of science, at Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University through June 12. The exhibition, a traveling version of one that opened at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington in April 2004, will be accompanied by 10 public events and lectures by experts in fields like medicine, history and philosophy.

Besides the extent of Nazi mutilation and murder, “it’s also surprising how accepted it was by the medical establishment in Germany,” said Jack Coulehan, a Stony Brook professor emeritus who still teaches medical ethics and was involved in bringing the exhibition to the university. “These were all doctors who had devoted their lives to healing,” Dr. Coulehan said as he walked through the display, which includes photos, explanatory texts, excerpts from Nazi literature and eight screens showing Nazi propaganda films with English subtitles and other footage.

One film shows people in asylums, while a voiceover says that the money spent on them could be better used elsewhere. A wall of photographs focuses on 8 of the 5,000 children killed by injection or starvation. Another film features interviews with Jewish survivors, including victims of Nazi experiments on twins. . .
