Dodd trails Simmons by 16 points (2010 Connecticut Senate Race)

Here’s the poll shocker of the day.

Embattled Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) is in severe political danger, trailing former GOP congressman Rob Simmons by 16 points, 50 to 34 percent, according to a new Quinnipiac poll. Among independent voters, Simmons leads Dodd by 31 points -- 56 to 25 percent.

Dodd also trails little-known state senator Sam Caligiuri by four points, 41 to 37 percent.

Dodd’s approval ratings are in the tank, with 58 percent of Connecticut voters disapproving of his job performance and only 33 percent viewing him favorably. He doesn’t even have support within his own party – only 51 percent of Democrats approve of him.

“A 33 percent job approval is unheard of for a 30-year incumbent, especially a Democrat in a blue state. Sen. Christopher Dodd's numbers among Democrats are especially devastating,” said Quinnipiac pollster Douglas Schwartz.

Voters are taking their anger out on Dodd for his involvement in legislation that allowed AIG executives to receive millions in bonuses. A whopping 74 percent of voters said they blamed Dodd for the bonuses. Meanwhile, 54 percent said they don’t believe Dodd is honest and trustworthy.

The poll, which surveyed 1,181 Connecticut voters, was conducted between March 26-31 and has a 2.9 percent margin of error.

Dodd can be taken out, but that would require telling the truth about AIG, so the republicans will let him keep his seat.

Your picture should have the faces reversed. It looks like Dodd is in pain and Bawney is happy! Oh, never mind, I think Bawney does play the girl’s role. My bad.

If Dodd is defeated, how long until he is a lobbyist for the banking/insurance industries?

The big question is whether Dodd will look at the polls and say “Hell, I’ve still got a chance. All I have to do is ride this mess out for a while” and will stay in the race or “Hell, I’m gonna get my ass handed to me in November of 2010. I better retire of my own choosing”.

I suspect that Dodd will stay in the race. He’s got nothing else to do other than be an elected official. He was elected to the US House in 1974 and then moved up to the Senate in 1980.

Washington DC is his life.

I bet they pull a Lautenberg, finding a last-minute replace to win the seat.

Simmons is in the RINO mold, but we’ll take it over this socialist wanker Dodd.

While this is indeed great news, Rob Simmons is hardly a conservative. He’ll be just another RINO in the Senate.

Agreed. As long as Dodd is so “vulnerable”, let's run a decent person and not someone who would simply be Dem-lite in the Senate. Someone even pointed out that Simmons may be the LEFT of Dodd on social issues. He's hardly “the best we can get” in Conn.

I don't see any good reason why a lender which requires a bailout shouldn't issue big bonuses to its obviously successful execs. ;') This is going to be an interesting wedge issue, since CT has such a high per capita income (not least due to the rich folks who work in NYC and live, and school their kids, in CT.
