Sanford to Take Bulk (Stimulus Capitulation Alert)

COLUMBIA — Less than 10 hours before deadline, Gov. Mark Sanford sent a letter to the Obama administration Friday to accept on behalf of South Carolina all but $700 million of the nearly $8 billion in federal stimulus money the state stands to receive to jump-start its economy.

While many across the state can rest easy that food stamps and jobs rebuilding South Carolina roadways are on the way as the federal cash starts flowing, schools are still in trouble.

The two-term Republican governor warned the public school system, the intended primary recipient of the $700 million over two years, to not bank on getting the cash. Superintendent of Education Jim Rex, a Democrat, said Sanford's decision increases pressure on the districts that already are faced with making significant layoffs before next school year.

Sanford capitulation alert, eh?

Well, you might as well sound the Palin capitulation alert, or the Jindal capitulation alert, since Sanford was the last governor to certify acceptance of the Porkulus funds, and Palin and Sanford the only two governors to refuse the $700 Million education funds included as part of the Porkulus "carrot."

As for the $700 Million in question, Sanford has announced that he will not release it to the South Carolina legislature until its members appropriate an equivalent amount of state funds to pay off state obligations, thereby neutralizing Obama's (and the Democrats' at the national level) ability to attack Sanford, as well as boxing the state legislature into a corner. Furthermore, and note well, Sanford's primary opponents in the South Carolina legislature are...Republicans, led by S.C. Sen. Hugh Leatherman from Florence.

But hey, go on right ahead and omit those needed parts in your misguided quest to advance the political chameleon and leftist prop Romney.

Too bad. I respect him for taking a stand, something which seems so difficult for many elected republicans to do.

I suppose in the end he had to give in, and with little support from the republicans in DC, what could he do.

Unlike the rats, which tend to keep the heat on, the rinos will only do so for a bit and then move on. Sometimes I wish the GOP would learn to play chess, instead of tic-tac-toe.

Still, thanks gov. Sanford for your stand. I for one respect what he did, even though in the end he had to give in.

He had zero support from the Republicans in DC, save for DeMint, and he was attacked by Republicans in his own state's legislature.

I’m not going to condemn the guy for this one position. But it is disappointing when people we look at as future leaders and candidates say one thing and then do something different. His tactic with the legislature seem smart.

Mitt Romney? No way, no how, never!

Very disappointing.

I believe many South Carolinians were ready to commit themselves as the point of the spear to take back state sovereignty from the criminal fascist syndicate occupying Washington. It’s in the nature of the citizens in SC, from Moultrie’s heroic defense at Fort Johnson in June, 1776, to the “Swamp Fox” and his guerilla tactics that made the British split their forces and allowed General Washington time to regroup.

Very, very disappointing. Sanford can’t read the political tea leaves. We don’t care if the welfare slobs and teacher’s unions are crying all over the pages of the worthless, left wing propaganda press in the state.

Looks like the job to take back the union falls to the ordinary citizen. Well, wouldn’t be the first time in history. We’ll need to find and grow our own leaders.

Capitulation? Hardly.

The way the media and even Republicrats around here were spinning it, Sanford was practically getting ready to starve the children....

Be warned the starter of this thread is a certifiable Mark Sanford hater and Slick Willard sycophant and liberal troll. Its goal is to post negative, false and/or distorting articles and anything that would undermine Gov. Sanford for 2012 and to mislead FReepers. The trolls goals are to undermine not only Sanford, but Gov. Palin as well, both are Slick Willard’s sworn enemies, as both are actual accomplished Conservatives.

Gives you an idea of how much of a threat Sanford is to the RINO status quo (nevermind the rodents).

As with any true conservative. The rats and rinos can’t fathom that people actually have conservative values and are willing to fight for them.

For that, I thank Sanford for showing the way.

The subject of this thread is Sanford’s capitulation on the stimulus. You and the other romneybots should stop trying to insert romney into every discussion.

You're an idiot if you believe that we are the Romneybots. One need only look at your posting history to see where your loyalties lie.

You are the one who brought romney into this thread.

I stand by my previous comment. I may respect Romney and Palin but I don’t keep bringing them into every discussion.
