Most of the hallmarks of the foreign policy of George W. Bush are gone. The old conservative idea of “American exceptionalism,” which placed the U.S. on a plane above the rest of the world as a unique beacon of democracy and financial might, has been rejected. At almost every stop, Obama has made clear that the U.S. is but one actor in a global community.
Talk of American economic supremacy has been replaced by a call from Obama for more growth in developing countries. Claims of American military supremacy have been replaced with heavy emphasis on cooperation and diplomatic hard labor.

What does that have to do with Obama supporting Turkey’s entrance into the EU, the same policy as the Bush administration’s?
Ibn al’0bama is more transparent to the Euros than he is to US citizens. They KNOW he is a muzsymp who wants nothing more than to have millions more muzzies flock to Europe through the open Turkish door.
France and England know the problems they bring with them. No thanks, is just awfully polite diplomatic language for Bleep Off Obama.
Don’t kid yourself. This is just a continuation of Bush’s policy.
He was also pushing for Turkey joining the EU.
I have spent some time in Turkey and interviewed Turkish businessmen. This is THE Muslim nation that could change the world for the better. Turks see entrepreneurship, world class education, and economic growth as major forces in Turkish life. I have worked with Turkish academics and they strive and succeed as excellent examples not only to Turks but to American and other intellectuals. They have their own terrorist problems to deal with and live in a sometimes tense world between the Black Sea and Greece. There is a world of difference between Turkey and Iran or Syria. I even met Israeli businessmen operating in Istanbul. Don’t reject Turkey because they are Muslim—Turkey could be the key to a better future for both West and East.
But, don’t for a second do I think BO knows what he’s doing. If BO was guiding the entry of Turkey, I believe he would set Turkey AND the EU back. He appeals to the retrograde elements around the world, not the forward and freedom-loving peoples. Turkey would be well advised to eye his support warily.
To those Europeans who have had problems with Turkish immigrants, I note that those immigrants may be the same folks who flood Istanbul and cause the same problems in Turkey. Turkey itself has as similar problem as France or Germany.
Just my observations—no insults intended.
Well, you might be right about Turkey, as it made great efforts to be “westernized” and was expecting to be admitted into the EU. But, that “time” for it to have been done (I think) has passed and Turkey appears to be moving the wrong way now. It’s backing off of the advances that it has made in the past and it’s moving to be more like Iran than like another EU nation (although it’s got a long ways to go before it’s “Islamisized” like Iran... LOL...).
I couldn’t say for sure because I’ve never been over there. But, the Bible does indicate that Turkey will be in the confederation of nations that attack Israel in the future, which sort of indicates to me that it won’t be getting into the EU, and will be moving more solidly towards those other Islamic nations in the Middle East.
The Islamic fundamentalists are increasing their influence in Turkey, including the government. It is becoming less Westernized as a result. I will also remind you that it was Turkey that stopped the US 4th ID from entering Iraq from the north transiting Turkey.
Give me a break. Americans don’t bow down to King Abdulla or any other one. We also don’t touch the Queen of England unless with greeting hands. What slobs. Sarkozy’s wife doesnt like Mrs. Obama and Angela Merkel from Germany threw cold water on a plan to add more money to the IMF. Germany doesnt want the hyper-inflation that brought the NAZIs into power ever again.
Turkey is the door to islam and its nations and the French already know the dhimension of the problem.

If Turkey is allowed into the EU we will have a civil war in Germany 10 years later. I hope any politician who supported their membership will then end up swinging from a traffic light.
Well, Turkey has definitely been at the cross-roads of Christianity and Islam for a very long time... :-)
Well, that has certainly been true for a long time. The Turks were staunch allies all through the Cold War. They guarded Europe's flank and they guarded the Middle East from direct Russian influence--although the KGB certainly managed to stir up a lot of "nationalist" trouble covertly.
But something went wrong in the run-up to the Iraqi invasion. Turkey didn't just refuse to let us go through their territory; they strung us along until the last possible moment, when one of our strongest divisions was stationed off their coast, and THEN refused to let us in.
The invasion still succeeded, but no thanks to the Turks. And it gave Saddam's northern armies a chance to escape and make a lot of trouble as irregulars afterward.
Yes, Turkey under Attaturk seemed to be breaking free of Islamic fundamentalism. But I'm by no means sure that they are not sliding back again.
In any case, it's not our job to tell the EU what to do. Even though I suspect that Chirac was the guy who persuaded the Generals to do what they did, with a promise that he would admit them to the EU if they helped stand up for Saddam and Total-Fina-Elf. Much good that promise did the Turks.

People are surprised? Turkey is 99% muslim.
Obama's position is the same position taken on the issue by George Bush. You'll have to think a little deeper to figure this out.

Well, I certainly can’t prove it. But Chirac was desperate to stop the invasion to protect his oil deals with Saddam.
France is, or was, the single most influential member of the EU. So he certainly could have told the Generals, “Block the invasion, and I’ll work to get you into the EU.”
The question of Turkey’s membership was particularly hot at the time.
I’m not saying that Chirac’s pledge was worth a plugged nickel, but I certainly suspect that’s what happened.
