Rasmussen: 57% Want Military Response to North Korea Missile Launch
Rasmussen Reports ^ | April 05, 2009 | by Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 04/05/2009 10:28:03 AM PDT by MaestroLC

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of U.S. voters nationwide favor a military response to eliminate North Korea’s missile launching capability. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that just 15% of voters oppose a military response while 28% are not sure. [...]

The telephone survey was conducted Friday and Saturday, April 3-4, the two days immediately prior to North Korea’s launch. The question asked about a military response if North Korea actually did launch a long-range missile.

Support for a military response comes from 66% of Republicans, 52% of Democrats and 54% of those not affiliated with either major political party. There is no gender gap on the issue as a military response is favored by 57% of men and 57% of women.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls.) Rasmussen Reports updates also available on Twitter.

Overall, 75% of voters say they’ve been closely following news stories about the possible launch. That figure includes 40% who’ve followed the news Very Closely.

Seventy-three percent (73%) are at least somewhat concerned that North Korea will use nuclear weapons against the United States. That’s up just a few points from 69% who held that view in October 2006. Prior to that survey, North Korea had successfully conducted an underground nuclear test.

Currently, 39% are Very Concerned about a possible nuclear attack from North Korea.

Just three percent (3%) of voters view North Korea as an ally while 46% say it’s an enemy. Surprisingly, the latter number is down 14 points from a survey in mid-February despite North Korea's belligerent talk before the missile launch.

Forty-four percent (44%) now say North Korea is somewhere between an ally and an enemy, while eight percent (8%) are not sure.

Sixty-four percent (64%) of Republicans consider North Korea an enemy of the United States. That view is shared by 50% of unaffiliateds and 28% of Democrats. Most Democrats (57%) place North Korea somewhere between ally and enemy.

Only 27% say the United States should help North Korea rebuild its economy if it is willing to abandon its missile program. Fifty-one percent (51%) are opposed to such financial aid. These findings are largely unchanged from mid-February.

Obama failed his first real-world test. He showed weakness. North Korea proved to the world the US is a paper tiger. Iran and our enemies will be emboldened.

Meanwhile, Obama and the Dems wants to cut our military and reduce our arms capabilities.

Hope. Change.

At least some positives in this poll is that some Americans get the danger we are in, and this is before the NK missile test hit the news. If these numbers are indeed true, then Obama made a massive error in his weak response that Americans may not easily forgive.

Next?

Israel takes note, and bombs Iran on its own, since Obama will not help protect Israel!

Hey, Netanyahoe can say, “You won't defend your own interests, why should we trust you to defend Israel?”

Well you 57%, you shouldn’t have voted for Obama then. Elections have consequences.

I am *really* shocked that the numbers are this high.

There might be hope for the republic yet!

Those same Bolsheviks won't have to do any re-educating at all, if they succeed in disarming us. After that, they can just bully us around however they want, whether or not we disagree with them.

Do you think Obama and the liberals think he failed the test? I think they are patting themselves on the back praising him for how “statesmanly” he is acting. And did you hear his speech today (using a teleprompter) about how this launch was a blah, blah, blah. This guy loves the sound of his own voice, but he will not do anything to North Korea. When the UN Security Council does nothing, he’ll say we shouldn’t do anything until we get “consensus” because after all, we aren’t a superpower, now we’re team players on the world stage. And remember, what did Bill Clintoon do through the 90’s. He gave them a lot of money and a lot of nuclear technology for nuclear power. So Obama is really Clintoon II on this one. (But you gotta love the picture of Madeline Albright sipping champagne with Kim Jong Il thinking she was the greatest Sec State ever).

It goes to show you that they don’t seem to be working for us, or the US. I pray that things get straightened out before we are destroyed.

Iran and our enemies will be emboldened.

Hopefully our allies will be emboldend too--to see to their own defense. Israel and Japan et al. are not about to get dragged over the precipice just because a moral and political coward rules from the White House.

Amen, our kids and families are in the military. I wouldn't waste one drop of blood on N Korea.

Besides, China decides what N Korea does. China is getting no attention here.

Why send the military. The country is being destroyed from within.

I was listening to some local jack arse African American guy who is usually tolerable on Sundays on the radio. He is bashing Gordon Brown and this one world thing. He is trying to say Obama is not on board. You can tell the hope & change kool aide is wearing off but he is still making excuses.

Shut down our defense contractors too. Waste of moeny. All filled with union thug workers anyway.

Most of the morons in this country care more about the Final 4, some other sport or reality TV show. Their kids future’s are being sold out and they are concerned about ball games.

I was at a business conference and one guy was talking about the college team and why the quarterback this and that. The typical inane sports talk radio crap like any of it really matters.

I find these results hard to believe. It seems to me that the nation is rather war weary and that is why they voted for a communtiy organizer over a decorated war hero. . .
