My niece [Mother of all five] has been so controlled from the time she was young," Johnson said

Control. It's more, "If I can't have you [and the kids], then no one can have you" than it is grief that he lost his lovely bride. We've seen this scenario many times before, and we'll see it again.

Troyer said because the shots were fired at close range, it makes sense that neighbors might not have heard the killings taking place.

You are correct. His intent was to leave her alive to suffer with ‘what she caused him to do’ for the rest of her life.

interesting. So he was known to be abusive before the fact.

Wonder if she or the children had a restraining order against him?

If so, I wonder if anyone bothered to explain that it isn’t worth the paper it’s written on, legally speaking.

The police are *not* legally obligated to protect a person with a restraining order. It is up to the holder of the order to protect themselves.

Add to that what aaron posted, she had been married since she was 13—my God, the situation was ripe for this.

In a perfect world she would have grown up, matured and left the SOB taking the kids with her. But we all know it is not a perfect world.

This line broke my heart:
“.....The fifth was found in the bathroom, surrounded by signs of violent struggle....”

Sorry to say that many here seem to ignore the horrible situation that the man was left in. Yes, I know he had to be a bit over the top to react as he did, but please folks...see his viewpoint - his world ended.

Now that I have that off my chest, yes, I agree that he was way over the top, and the outcome was the worse possible...

Take a step back and visualize his pain toward the end of his life. These kind of situations happen often - thank goodness that the awful result that he took is infrequent.

Adultery used to be illegal. This is one reason why.

You can sugar-coat this all you want, Miss Green, but it is utterly impossible that more than one child was asleep at the time he or she was killed.

Unless, of course, the rifle had a silencer.

With the untrained, and the very young, they'd normally wake in utter fright or shock at hearing loud explosions going off....Unfortunately, for a few of them they would probably just pulled up the covers, remain silent, scared stiff, listening, until...

Very sad.

Many nowadays seem to be wound very tightly...Not much different than living time bombs.

I’m not only referring to this guy who killed the kids. I’m also referring to the guy who shot the cops who came to his door, to the guy who shot up the immigrant center, etc. “Dude, just put the barrel in your own mouth and leave everyone else out of it.”

Even if she was cheating on him, killing those children was totally senseless.

Ummmm, she could cheat with every man in town and half the dogs and it wouldn't justify killing one innocent child.

I’m sure you realize that restraining orders are stupid legal documents that mean nothing to anyone that means violence. Reminds me of those that think that getting rid of guns will reduce violence (better get rid of knives, bats, and other blunt instruments of death).

This man lost all hope due to a unfaithful wife - yes I’m sure that those here will disagree but his hopelessness was brought on by his spouse. Now his actions against others, especially his own kids was crazy!

“Even if she was cheating on him, killing those children was totally senseless.”

Not senseless, just evil.

Living in a country where his wife would get custody, child support, and alimony in spite of her adultery, this evil man asserted his control over the situation. It makes perfect sense.

Yes...but can you see just how that could make him crazy enought to do what he did? (Well apart from killing his own children - should have kept it to who was responsible)...

At any rate, I can see this kind of rage happening to both marriage partners - just don’t see the killing of their offspring. That is just plain crazy! Reminds me of the killing of animal life (previous babies) when a new male takes over a heard. Are we coming to that!

Unfortunately I don’t think it is that uncommon.

Actually, you make perfect sense regards the current laws between husband and wife during divorce. The man is almost always deemed the culprit (90+ percent of the time) and has to pay for most of his life. No wonder that marriage is on the wane...

Never did I excuse HIM. Believe me what he did was barbaric. (I have 5 children)

However, she must have known he was a bit unstable.....
She must live with her decision to leave her children with him.

Perspective. Perspective please.

Yep. It isn't worth killing yourself over.

Really, You are already hurt, so why punish yourself, especially if you didn't do anything wrong (and yes, that happens).

Shoot the kids? No way.

If a woman wants to leave, gracefully show her to the door--and change the locks ASAP.

That way the other feller gets just what he deserves.

Don't get mad, get even.

They want to inflict pain upon others before they go.

Yeah, it is a real bummer to have to take care of five kids you have produced. There is no excuse for killing those kids.

He was going to kill his wife too; and, he couldn’t find her.

I have no sympathy for this animal.

If this guy would have only calmed down and thought this over, his soon to be ex did him a favor. How many guys would love to get a divorce and keep the kids? He probably could have gotten alimony off of her. The kids obviously would favor the dad because she left them (not just him) for another man also.

He was better off withouth this scumbag woman and didn’t even realize it. Why punish the kids? I do not condone, but understand why he would want to take out the wife. I don’t understand why he would ever want to harm the kids. They were hurt by her as much as he was.
